Last week, the Foundation was presented with an incredible opportunity by a generous donor from New York who wished to gift two tickets to game five of the 2026 NBA Finals to a University Health pediatric patient and a family member 🏀💙.

That opportunity became a reality for Moises Diaz, a young patient and lifelong basketball fan who had spent 33 days in the hospital recovering from spinal fusion surgery. After watching the NBA Playoffs from his hospital bed, Moises was discharged and cleared to return home. The very next day, he and his mother, Elisa Diaz, found themselves cheering from the stands at the Frost Bank Center, enjoying complimentary mid-level seats during the NBA Finals.

“I would like to say to the donor, congratulations on winning! Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to witness the NBA Finals. I had so much fun,” Moises said.

A special thank you to our generous donor, the Spurs Foundation and the University Health clinical team for helping make this unforgettable experience possible 🙌.

On Tuesday, we hosted our Cultivating Care: Growing Tomorrow’s Medical Workforce event to inform the community about University Health’s Medical Assistant (MA) Program.

Attendees heard from University Health leaders about the plan to use the MA Program not only as a pathway to successful health care careers, but also as a way to address critical social and economic disparities.

We also heard a powerful testimonial from University Health registered nurse Erica Rodriguez. As a young mother, Erica began her career at University Health as a Medical Assistant 13 years ago. Today, she is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing with support from the Foundation’s Reach for the Stars Nursing Scholarship and encouragement from a University Health team culture that she said believed in her even when she didn’t believe in herself.

“Had a program like this existed when I was starting out, it would’ve changed everything,” Erica said. “A paid externship and a direct pathway would have eased so much of the financial stress I faced as a young mom trying to build a future.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this meaningful event.

Congratulations to the 2026 winners of the CareLink “How I Stay Safe” Art Contest!

Take a look at some of the incredible artwork that was on display at University Hospital last week. This art was created by local students to raise awareness about important safety topics, including fire prevention, bullying, pedestrian safety and more.

The Foundation was honored to recognize the artists by awarding them San Antonio Zoo and Santikos Movie passes for their creativity and hard work.

Over the last 12 years, Dr. Kevin Beitchman and his incredible team at Beitchman Orthodontics have donated more than 2,500 teddy bears to children across hospitals throughout San Antonio.

For the second year in a row, Dr. Beitchman and his team visited the University Health Women’s & Children’s Hospital with four vehicles filled with 230 Build-A-Bears to deliver to pediatric patients, bringing joy and comfort during their hospital stay.

Thank you, Dr. Beitchman for your generosity. We are honored by your continued support and grateful for the smiles and happiness you and your team bring to our young patients and their families.

On Friday, the Veterans Committee hosted its annual Memorial Day Observance and Reception to remember and honor the brave men and women who sacrificed everything for our country 🇺🇸.

We were honored to hear the thoughtful words of this year’s keynote speaker, our very own Foundation Board Chair, United States Army Brigadier General (Ret.) Shan Bagby. Thank you to everyone who joined us and took part in this meaningful event.
