Tips for Surviving the Relentless August Heat in San Antonio:
According to the Metro Health dashboard, June and August 2025 reported the highest number of heat-related illnesses in San Antonio, at 105 and 121, respectively. The heat index in August was 100 degrees, per the dashboard’s data.

Here are some tips for staying healthy in these extreme temperatures: Watch the overnight lows. August nights only drop to about 76°F. When it doesn't cool off after dark, your body never fully recovers, which is part of why multi-day heat waves send more people to the ER than a single hot afternoon.

Know the difference between exhaustion and stroke. Heat exhaustion looks like heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, and cramps; get to AC, sip water, cool down. Heat stroke is the emergency: skin goes hot and often dry, confusion sets in, body temp climbs past 103°F. That's a 911 call, not a wait-and-see.

Check on the people who won't check on themselves. Outdoor workers, older neighbors, and anyone without reliable AC are the ones showing up in the ER data. San Antonio opens cooling centers during heat advisories. 👉THIS IS A LIST OF COOLING CENTERS AROUND THE CITY. https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/6d653f0e2a034250b8038ab0f6e3781d

Sleep is one of the best things you can do for your vascular health.

While you sleep, your body repairs blood vessels, regulates blood pressure, and reduces inflammation. Getting 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night can help support healthy circulation and lower your risk of heart and vascular disease.

Healthy veins and arteries start with healthy habits, and a good night’s sleep is one of them.

When choosing a vein specialist, take a closer look at the physician's credentials.

Not all "board-certified" claims mean the same thing. A physician can be board-certified in a specialty unrelated to vein disease and still legally use the phrase.

At Medical Vein Clinic®, our physicians are selected for their expertise in venous and lymphatic medicine because treating vein disease is their focus.

Dr. John S. Hogg is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology and Venous & Lymphatic Medicine (DABVLM), with four additional registry credentials in vascular imaging and phlebology sonography: RPVI, RPhS, RVT, and RVS. Those credentials reflect years of specialized education, training, and experience in diagnosing and treating vein and lymphatic disease.

Dr. Hogg has also been recognized by U.S. News as a Top Patient Experience Doctor, a distinction based on patient survey data that reflects the quality of the patient experience.
