We are taught to treat forgetfulness as a cognitive failure — proof that the brain is not working as efficiently as it should.

Neuroscientists at Trinity College Dublin have found the opposite.

If your brain retained every sensory detail of every moment — every licence plate, every background noise, every ambient texture — your neural pathways would experience severe information congestion.

You would lose the ability to generalise, abstract, and adapt.

Efficient forgetting allows the brain to extract overarching principles rather than accumulate raw data, and to respond flexibly to a changing environment rather than remain anchored to obsolete details.

Intelligence is not just what you remember. It is also what your brain is able to discard.
