Dr. Edward Bustamante is an optometric physician with over 13 years of clinical practice experience. He earned his bachelors in science (minor in biological sciences & major in molecular biology) from the University of Texas-Austin where he graduated summa cm laude in 1996. He then went on to obtain his bachelors in vision science from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 2000 and his Doctor

of Optometry (O.D.) degree from the University of Houston, College of Optometry in 2002 where he graduated with clinical honors. Upon finishing his preliminary optometric education, Dr. Bustamante then went on to complete an ocular disease residency (2002-2003) at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Tx. There he gained valuable clinical insight working with fellowship trained sub-specialists (M.D.) in cornea and external disease, retina and vitreous, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, oculoplastics and pediatric ophthalmology. Following that training, he was hired by UTMB and became the first optometrist (O.D.) in the long history of that university to ever hold a faculty position in the Department of Ophthalmology. He worked side by side with subject matter experts in the University Eye Center from 2003-2005 and completed his Master’s in Business Administration (M.B.A.) concurrently in 2005, an impressive feat. He also published several peer-reviewed journal articles and obtained FDA certification in orthokeratology (non-surgical correction of myopia) during his time on staff at UTMB-Galveston. After his in-depth post-graduate training, he spent the next 4 years working in private practice with San Antonio’s leading ophthalmic surgeons, furthering his clinical competence and knowledge base in ocular disease/pathology. In 2009, he was hand selected to be 1 of 3 founding faculty members for the University of Incarnate Word, Rosenberg School of Optometry (UIW-RSO). As an educator, he lectured extensively in ocular anatomy and ophthalmic optics where students praised his teaching prowess. As an administrator, professor and clinical faculty, Dr. Bustamante was on staff with UIW-RSO from 2009-2012. Thereafter, he joined a private practice and did various moonlighting jobs, getting back to his roots as an ocular disease specialist. Recently, Dr. Bustamante was selected as an Advanced Contact Lens Expert (ACE) for Bausch & Lomb, one of the world’s leading research and development ophthalmic companies. He is 1 of 3 optometrists to be selected to such a coveted position. This appointment entails providing continuing education seminars on the latest contact lens products/services and lecturing throughout the country at various schools and colleges of Optometry. In Dr. Bustamante’s free time, he enjoys giving back to the community by providing vision screenings to under-served and under-privileged children in the San Antonio region. He also likes to travel, engage in outdoor activities, find homes for rescue animals, and attend/lead bible studies. You will not find a more dedicated, compassionate, competent, and humble optometric physician in the San Antonio area! Languages Spoken: English (fluently), Spanish (fluently)
