It's officially summer at Texas Biomed and Southwest National Primate Research Center now that that the 2026 Summer Scholars are aboard! We are delighted to welcome 20 students who will be actively participating in research labs, veterinary care and administration. This includes eight Valero Bridging Interns, who completed the Valero Young Scientist Program at Texas Biomed last summer and are now back to mentor this summer's young scientists as well as gain more hands-on experience in research labs on campus. We even have a couple of Valero alumni who are now college interns!

Texas Biomed's Community Outreach Club spent time at Travis Park delivering care kits to members of the unhoused community.

The kits included essential hygiene items, snacks and other everyday necessities aimed at providing comfort and support to those in need. More importantly, the experience was an opportunity to connect with our San Antonio community through compassion, service and kindness.

We don't like to brag, but we work with some pretty awesome people. Our quarterly TIDES of Success Awards are one way that teammates and supervisors can recognize individuals and teams demonstrating our core values. Winners were recognized for Teamwork, Integrity, Diversity, Excellence and Safety -- from a proactive, positive approach to tackle tasks ensuring the whole team stays on track; to improving safety protocols and keen attention to detail; to bringing deep levels of technical expertise and integrity to complex projects; and leading the efforts to give back to our broader San Antonio community. Bravo and congrats all!

We are thrilled to celebrate the newest building on campus with our team and community! The Health Center is our new central hub supporting advanced biomedical research and top-of-the-line care for our primates, which play a critical role in improving human health. This is a major milestone — part of an ongoing modernization plan — as we celebrate 85 years as an Institute. We are grateful to share this achievement with local leaders, including City of San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and State Representative Josey Garcia; our engaged Board of Trustees; our strong community of supporters; the teams who brought the project to life; and our dedicated colleagues who truly make Texas Biomed and the Southwest National Primate Research Center such an inspiring and impactful place to work.

The shifting weather couldn't dampen our FIESTA spirit last week! We combined our annual Food Fest, Field Day and BRAD Day into one big celebration, featuring lots of delicious food prepared and shared by our teammates, a stiff BBQ competition, fun outdoor games, ping pong tournament and ways to show support for our animals and those who take such amazing care of them. It was a fun afternoon getting out of our respective work spaces, showing off our team spirit and celebrating our Texas Biomed, SNPRC and SATX community.

As part of our Fiesta celebration on campus, we celebrated BRAD Day on April 16. Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) aims to raise awareness about the critical role animals play in advancing human health, honor their contributions, and say thanks to the incredible team of 150+ people at the Southwest National Primate Research Center at Texas Biomed who go above and beyond every day caring for our colonies. This year's BRAD Day event was better than ever, with lots of ways to show support and the special spirit that brings our San Antonio community together.
