Loneliness is not a feeling that long-term care residents should simply be expected to manage. It is a significant clinical risk factor for depression, anxiety, and other adverse health outcomes — including accelerated cognitive decline, higher rates of hospitalization, and measurably shorter life expectancy.

In long-term care settings, many residents have experienced the loss of spouses, family members, friends, independence, and familiar routines. These life changes can contribute to depressive symptoms that often go unrecognized because they present quietly. Residents who withdraw from activities, rarely receive visitors, stop expressing their needs, or appear disengaged may not simply be lonely — they may be experiencing clinically significant depression that warrants assessment and treatment.
