Need a massage in San Antonio? The goal of “relaxation” is therefore up to you.
(202)

Deep tissue myofascial "FasciAshi" Barefoot Massage & Structural Integration from the FEET of Jeni Spring, an award winning Licensed Massage Therapist since 2002. Relaxation is not exactly my focus, BUT the good news is that chemically, deep down to the cells of your body, a sense of relaxation happens with every ‘Deeper than Deep’ fascial therapy session that I do, even when it gets down to that

“hurts so good” level of pressure! To achieve a sense of mental relaxation and escape, that is a little trickier, and up to you. Just like how outdoor yoga is about BEING IN THE MOMENT and breathing through the distractions to find peace and focus, I encourage you to take notice of your body’s inner sensations during your sessions. I’ll provide the space, and I’ll do the hard work to focus on treating your soft tissue injuries,, so that YOU can enhance your own internal body awareness and heal through a mindful meditation on the internal sensations of this massage. The sessions that I provide are Myofascial Barefoot Massage sessions set on the massage table or on a floor mat that incorporate Stretch Therapy, and soon, also Structural Integration. My goal is to give you a sense of effortlessness in your movements, better awareness of how you feel inside your body, and to rehab your strains and pains into something self-manageable. How is that possible?! Barefoot Massage offers slow moving, broad pressured, myofascial and stretch therapy techniques. My skilled feet can get just as detailed as hands, (Spoiler alert: I may still have to do some specific Structural Integration techniques with my hands ::GASP!:: But the sessions are usually 99% from my feet.) My body weight and gravity allow me to maintain consistent pressure at the depth your body “kneads.”

Your nervous system reacts to this big-footed pressure the same as if it were a weighted blanket. Your muscles won’t need to clench from the pokey pain of elbows and fingers – it can melt under the rounded surfaces of our warm, clean, smooth feet. The active movements that I guide you thru during the stretch therapy sessions will help to recalibrate the GPS of your body’s perception of pain, and the deepen the brain-body connections that neuromuscularly inform the quality of your movement. There is a lot of science in this work. Speed up your recovery time and resolve chronic pain in a session with Jeni Spring, LMT at Heeling Sole Barefoot Massage!

That exact moment when an electric, burning line starts dead center in your glute and travels down your hamstring... your whole body instinctively freezes up.

When it gets down to the back of the knee, it can feel like a mix of something stuck in a cramp & a taut pull going down the calf. After living with that kind of intensity, you learn to move around it. You pivot, you swing your leg out, you find little compensations just to get through your day or do whatever you can to finish a short trail at McAllister Park right down the street from me to "walk it off" and hope for the best.

The trouble is, those habits keep your nervous system protecting you long after it needs to. "Getting used to it" doesn't help your brain reconceptualize those pain signals or turn down their intensity. It just stays in defense mode, trying to safeguard you from feeling that sudden zap again.

During a 12-Series of sessions last year, this client and I worked on shifting that whole pattern together. By combining Structural Integration, Myofascial Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage, and Stretch Therapy, I helped them learn to feel into what they called their "Sciatica Pain"... finding every location and tracking the intensity instead of running from it.

When we edge through those sensations together in a safe therapeutic setting, I can give their nervous system the green light to down-regulate that threat response. Holding steady with deep, broad foot pressure along those continuous myofascial lines gives their fascia room to release and slide, reducing both the physical and mental tension held around the fear of the pain.

Now, instead of relying on old protective habits, they come into my studio on Jones-Maltsberger for quick tune-ups at the first sign of a flare-up. If you are anywhere in North Central San Antonio, Stone Oak, or within a 20-minute drive of my office, come get underfoot here at Heeling Sole.

This kind of embodied learning is how you actually manage and recover from chronic, persistent pain.

Rainy day at the office here in San Antonio by McCallister Park, so the plants get to live outside for a while, and that "fresh rain on the pavement" smell drifts into the massage room.

New research is backing up what I try to teach my clients and Massage students about pain science: pain relief isn’t about how hard someone presses. It’s about how safe, relevant, and tolerable that input feels to your nervous system.

Two people can receive the same amount of pressure and have completely different outcomes. Why? Because pain isn’t produced in tissue alone…it’s an experience shaped by context, expectation, past injury, stress, and how well your brain can interpret what’s happening.

Key findings of that research:
✔️Higher pressure did not reliably produce better outcomes
✔️Perceived comfort, safety, and individual tolerance mattered more than force
✔️People receiving “lighter” or moderate pressure experienced comparable improvements in pain and function
✔️Excessive pressure increased guarding and threat responses in some participants

When pressure crosses your system’s threshold, the body guards. Pressure and depth are two different things. I know I have the right pressure, regardless of depth,.when blood flow changes, breathing shifts, layers feel melty.

I try to get deeper through feeling and responding to your layers of tissue, sinking till we find it or scrolling deeper each pass, not pushing. I try to use weight, time, angle, and responsiveness to help your tissues make their own changes… it does feel good to just stand there and get deeper through time and little tilts of my feet or body, when we both click into that sensation, that's the fun stuff, but the actual amount of pressure used is totally different every session for everyone.

“Does pressure matter?”
DOI: 10.1186/s12891-025-08741-6

Clinical takeaway:
Depth alone is not a treatment variable. The nervous system’s interpretation of pressure determines whether it helps or hinders.

Hi it's me, Jeni Spring!

Normally you'll find me massaging every week here in San Antonio at my local biz ... Or teaching every month for my national continuing education company the ... Or running the biz's behind the scenes out of my home tiki bar with my dog snoring at my feet... But for 2 weeks in June, I got to run away to the Big Island with my husband & his parents!

Here are more pictures:

On our last day, we spent our last few moments outside of the airport at the closest beach having a stare down with the ocean, & yeah, I got on the plane with sandy toes! We saw/felt/smelt/experienced Kilauea erupt, we swam with Manta Rays, we watched either the sunrise or sunset every day, I had several many Mai Tais, & we took a local shelter dog, Dill, on a hike during a rainstorm up in a forest in the clouds!

I also received a traditional Hawaiian Barefoot Massage called Kua Lua, soaked my feet in a cold plunge full of salt water piped up from the depths of the ocean, & used a tide pool surrounded by lava rocks as my own personal float tank under the moon.

The most important thing is that I really pushed myself to stay off my phone. I left all my Bosslady stuff for both companies out of reach & I did my best to NOT WORK. This made the days longer & my experiences more experienced.

If you are a business owner, you know we can very rarely not work. Something or someone always pulls us back into the grind. I'm sure it's the same way for parents, you can't just get away.

Well lemme say, after 23 years of owning a business & never really ever going off the grid, I'm so glad that I did on this trip & ignored everything pounding down my inbox... And if you are in a similar situation to me, I hope you can enjoy a vacay without working, too.

I know even sometimes it's hard to get thru a massage or class with me without our biz notifications buzzing in our purses.

We can stop & put our feet in the ocean. We can ignore the voicemails & smell the Plumerias. We can take a dog for a walk in the rain with the phone all the way off. We can go on a 2-week vacation & not take our work laptops!!!! Now I'm back to enjoying my weekends at home, practicing the act of waiting until office hours on Monday to answer an email 😂

We can do hard things, lol!

Here's a recent 1-hour Myofascial Barefoot Massage session focusing on some low back/hip and shoulder pain for this client.

I used deep, slow pressure that grabbed onto deep fascial layers that surround muscle groups and created a grip and drag sensation while he moved and mobilized underneath and pulled away from that pressure. This helps me to recreate sliding between layers of all this tissue, rather than a feeling of stiff or stuckness, and helps reintroduce your mind to your body as you concentrate on moving in ways that feel useful under pressure.

This active stretch therapy mixed with myofascial pressure really helps your nervous system get better at recognizing what and where you feel something, and helps you learn how to heal on your own by better sensing the potential range of intensity and limits of your tissue layers.

Your body knows how to get better, it knows how not to be in pain constantly... it's just overstimulated, overwhelmed and annoyed. (Aren't we all?!)

Come get underfoot with me, and in these massages that make you work on yourself a little with me, we can Heel that stuff together. 👣🫶🏼

I recently had the opportunity to receive a traditional Hawaiian Kua Lua barefoot session right on the coastline in Hawaii. The setting was pure magic... the ocean waves crashing so close, the pacing timed perfectly with the tide, a truly beautiful, unforgettable experience.

But as a clinical bodyworker, my brain never completely shuts off. 🤓

While I sat in deep respect for the history and the soul of that ancient lineage, looking at the work through the lens of all the training I've had was revealing. Even though the bodywork itself and the vibes of the moment were beautiful, it was still a routine. The angles, the compressions, and the depths were done the exact same way on both sides, without a real clinical reason or a deep focus on joint mobilization and alignment. To be fair, this was a vacation massage, and your first massage with anyone is always pretty basic in comparison to the potential that will unfold with time. I know that with repeat visits it would get more and more intricate and customized. This session in Hawaii was focused on the pure experience of the traditional work so that I could feel it's roots.

It gave me an incredible amount of perspective on the evolution of Barefoot Massage worldwide and what I offer my clients here at Heeling Sole. It brought me right back to the weight of what I teach and practice every single day. I don't just follow a script or a history book... I look at your alignment and I change my strategy to fit exactly what your nervous system and your tissue need in that moment.

I came home with a massive wave of gratitude for what I've built back home based on all that I continue to experience in the world of Barefoot Massage. I keep feeling what is "out there" to experience why I do what I do when I teach and when I massage. You don’t have to book a flight to get elite, deeply transformative barefoot work... We can change your structure and outlook on the moment right here under my feets in San Antonio at Heeling Sole!

(Although if you ever get the chance to receive Kua Lua, Chavutti Thirumal, or a very traditional Shiatsu session in another country, you should!)
