Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the resilience, compassion and strong sense of community that define Hispanic cultures. For Ada Montalvo, physicians assistant, these values guide the way she cares for patients and connects with those around her. “As a Puerto Rican, I am proud to be able to connect with our Hispanic community in my clinic and in the operating room. Not only does language bring us together when a patient is Spanish speaking, but there is an instant understanding through our similar traditions and culture.” Inspired by her Puerto Rican roots and the example set by her parents, Ada brings perseverance, compassion and understanding to every interaction. Their lessons, along with her experiences adapting to change and overcoming challenges, continue to shape her commitment to serving others and fostering a spirit of unity.

We honored with a special “Light the Afternoon” walk alongside Blood Cancer United - South Central Texas. This event gave our patients, families, and Associates a chance to celebrate, honor, and remember those touched by blood cancers.
It was an afternoon full of hope and milestones, including cheering for two of our patients as they rang the “End of Treatment Bell” to mark the end of their cancer treatment.

For Amara Rodriguez, her story began with an unexpected challenge. Shortly after birth, doctors discovered she had Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a rare and serious congenital heart defect that meant the left side of her heart was underdeveloped.

At just six days old, Amara underwent her first open-heart surgery. Over the following year, she bravely faced multiple procedures, while her family leaned on faith and the support of a dedicated team of cardiovascular specialists.

Today, Amara's journey continues, but so does her strength. With every milestone, she reminds us that behind every heartbeat is a story of courage, resilience, hope, and the people who make healing possible.

This World Heart Day, we celebrate heart survivors like Amara, the families who stand beside them, and the healthcare teams committed to giving every child the chance to write their next chapter.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Óscar Romero.

Born in El Salvador in 1917, Romero became one of Latin America’s most courageous voices for justice, peace and human dignity. Though he was once viewed as cautious, his leadership changed after he became archbishop in 1977 and witnessed the violence and suffering inflicted on the poor.

Romero began preaching boldly against violence, corruption and the abuse of the powerless, knowing his words could cost him his life. His defense of the poor and vulnerable earned admiration around the world, including a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

On March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass, Romero was assassinated. Declared a martyr and canonized in 2018, Saint Óscar Romero remains a prophetic witness to justice, peace and the Gospel’s call to love and defend the vulnerable.

New chapters start every day in our NICU 📚💜
We’ve wrapped up our NICU with Babies read-a-thon, and our families logged 166 reading sessions with countless stories shared along the way. Every book helps create moments of connection while supporting our babies’ development and setting them up for a strong future.
And we love seeing that medicine comes in all forms! A special thank-you to Dr. Parikh for grabbing a book and joining our families in showing that sometimes, a little reading is part of the care, too. 📖🩺

As first-time parents, Israel and Angelina Johnson hoped for a smooth delivery, but they were also prepared for the unexpected. They created a plan that included our New Braunfels Hospital and Children’s Hospital as their go-to emergency care options. A plan that was put into action when a placental abruption during labor turned their birth story into a medical emergency. Within minutes of arriving at our New Braunfels hospital, Angelina underwent an emergency C-section.
Baby Arik was unresponsive. Fortunately, he was resuscitated by the care team, placed on a specialized transport, and transferred to our Children’s Hospital for advanced neonatal care.
What followed was a month-long NICU journey filled with challenges. Despite the seizures, therapeutic cooling, respiratory support, learning how to eat, breathe and grow on his own, Arik kept fighting.
He recovered his kidney and lung function, was able to take on full feeds and even gained weight, surpassing expectations.
As they prepare to bring him home, the Johnson family is grateful not only for the clinical expertise they received but also for the compassion shown by our entire team.
"It's the humanity that stands out,” Angelina said. “Everyone has supported us as whole people, not just patients.”

Across our CHRISTUS ministries, we have exceptional Associates with incredible stories who are putting our . Today we’re recognizing Becky Smith, certified child life specialist, for her work supporting children with oncology, rheumatology and hematology diagnoses. Through education, emotional support, therapeutic play and connections to community resources, Becky helps patients and families feel cared for during some of life’s most challenging moments.

“Compassion resonates most with me because I love serving our patients and families during a challenging time in their life,” she shares. “Whether that’s educating a child about their diagnosis, providing emotional support or just having fun while they’re in the hospital, I want them to feel supported and cared for.”

Through every interaction, Becky demonstrates that compassionate care extends beyond treatment, helping children and families feel seen, supported and empowered. Thank you, Becky, for living our mission and values and making a difference in the lives of those we serve every day.
