When a Cardinal Appears
When a cardinal appears,
we believe it carries something more—
a gentle reminder
that those we have loved and lost
are never truly far away.
A flash of red among the branches,
a quiet song in the stillness,
a familiar feeling in our hearts—
as if an angel has come near
just to whisper,
“I am still with you.”
At Cardinal Hospice,
the cardinal carries another meaning, too.
It represents the promise we make
to stand guard over those entrusted to our care—
to protect their dignity,
to bring comfort when days become difficult,
and to surround every patient
with compassion, respect, and love.
We stand beside their families.
We hold the hands of their loved ones.
We listen when there are no easy words,
and we remain present
when simply being there means everything.
Because hospice is not only about life’s ending.
It is about honoring the life that was lived,
treasuring the moments that remain,
and reminding families
that they do not have to walk this journey alone.
And perhaps, somewhere nearby,
another cardinal is watching too—
a mother, a father,
a husband, a wife,
a grandparent, a friend,
someone deeply loved
who has gone before us.
So when we see the cardinal,
we remember those we have lost.
We remember the angels we believe remain near.
And we remember our own calling:
To watch over.
To comfort.
To protect.
To love.
And to be a guardian for every patient
and every family we are blessed to serve.
