What happens when a dentist tries to fix their OWN cavity? 😳🦷

Technically… yes, it can be done. But that definitely doesn’t mean I recommend it 😂

Dental instruments are designed to be used while you’re looking directly at someone else’s teeth.

Trying to get the right angles, visibility, and precision on your own mouth—even with multiple mirrors—is a completely different story.

And with a filling, the goal isn’t just to remove the cavity.

We also want to preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible and create a restoration that protects the tooth long-term.

So even if you’re a dentist, this is one DIY project I’d leave to a dentist friend. 😅

What is IPR… and why do we sometimes use it during Invisalign treatment? 🦷

IPR (interproximal reduction) is a technique we can use to create a tiny amount of extra space between the teeth.
We’re usually talking about just 0.2–0.5 mm per spot — enough to help crowded teeth move into better positions without removing more tooth structure than necessary.

It can be especially helpful when:

✨ There’s moderate to severe crowding
✨ We need a little more room for teeth to move
✨ The upper and lower teeth need to fit together better
✨ We’re trying to avoid extractions when appropriate

It’s a small step that can make a big difference in creating the space we need for a healthier, more aligned smile.
Every Invisalign plan is different, which is why we always walk our patients through exactly what their treatment will involve before getting started.
