Ranked as one of the 10 best children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in 2024, Rady Children’s Hospital includes a 511-bed pediatric hospital that serves as the largest provider of comprehensive pediatric medical services in San Diego, southern Riverside and Imperial counties. When Kaiya’s mom went in for a routine ultrasound at 20 weeks, she learned Kaiya had spina bifida, a condition in which the spine and spinal cord do not fully develop.

Today, Kaiya is 17-year-old high school senior, competitive wheelchair basketball player and a reminder that a diagnosis does not define what a child can accomplish. 🌟

Kaiya’s family traveled across the country to Rady Children’s Health, where a multidisciplinary team spanning neurology, orthopedics, urology and rehabilitation has helped her build strength and independence.

During her first appointment, Dr. Le, one of her rehabilitation medicine physicians, encouraged her family to explore wheelchair basketball. That recommendation became a life-changing opportunity, giving Kaiya a community and confidence that have carried into every part of her life.

Soon, she will take on another exciting role: team captain at the Rady Children’s Invitational, an NCAA basketball tournament taking place over Thanksgiving. 🏀

Her advice to other families is to look beyond the diagnosis and discover what makes your child feel confident, capable and connected. 💙

Born more than three months early, Mahía faced extraordinary challenges from her very first moments. After nearly five months in the NICU at Rady Children’s, she’s finally home. 💙

Mahía and her twin brother, Maelrik, were born at just 22 weeks, weighing only 490 grams each. While Mahía fought for her life, her family faced the unimaginable heartbreak of losing Maelrik far too soon.

“Maelrik had to leave us far too soon,” their mom Alexis says. “He became his sister’s guardian angel.”

Intubated just minutes after birth, Mahía faced serious complications affecting her heart, intestines, lungs and eyes, along with other challenges related to extreme prematurity. Through countless procedures, surgeries and sleepless nights, her care team supported Mahía and her family every step of the way.

Today, Mahía is home, surrounded by those who adore her. As her family looks toward the future with faith and hope, they carry Maelrik’s memory with them, knowing he will always be her guardian angel. 💙

We recently welcomed back our “Little Heroes” NICU graduates & their families to celebrate their incredible journeys. Through our NICU Care Coordination Program, families of babies with complex medical needs receive personalized support throughout their NICU stay & beyond discharge, helping them navigate the journey home with confidence & compassion.

It was a special day celebrating incredible progress, resilient families & the care teams who support them along the way. ✨

This , our construction partner Hensel Phelps made Frank’s day by surprising him with construction gear of his own. 👷‍♂️🏗️

“Frank loves construction equipment and the bright, colorful uniforms,” says his mom, Karen. “One of the only things that made him feel better during treatments was looking out the window and watching the world waiting for him outside. Sometimes, something as simple as looking out a window, sharing a smile or seeing something that excites them can help a child feel happy and connected again.”

Outside Frank’s window, our new seven-story ICU & Emergency Services Pavilion & the behavioral health facility is taking shape day by day, and the people building it have given Frank a source of excitement, comfort & hope. 💙

A moment worth documenting. 🤳🧬👂

Inside the operating room at Rady Children's Health in San Diego, Dr. Daniela Carvalho and her team administered one of the first gene therapy treatments for hearing loss in the world using Otarmeni (lunsotogene parvec-cwh), the first and only FDA-approved gene therapy for children with severe-to-profound and profound OTOF-related hearing loss, a rare genetic condition caused by variants in the OTOF gene.

As the first authorized treatment center on the West Coast, we're proud to bring this treatment to children with OTOF-related hearing loss and be part of what's next in pediatric hearing care. 💙

Meet Lennox, also known as Lenny! 👋 Just 16 hours after he was born, Lenny went into cardiac arrest caused by thrombosis, or blood clots in his arteries.

Lenny was urgently transferred by our Children’s Hospital Emergency Transport (CHET) team to the NICU at Rady Children’s, where he required more than three weeks of intensive care, including care from Dr. Amy Kimball. Thanks to his expert care team, Lenny’s story took a remarkable turn.

Lenny’s mom says, “The sheer instincts of these professionals were mind-blowing. We were allowed to participate in rounds in a meaningful way & always knew the plan for the day. The Rady Children’s NICU team is the most well-oiled machine on the planet. They truly love what they do, & we owe everything to them.“

Today, Lenny has no lasting effects from his cardiac arrest. Nicknamed “Lenny the Lion” for the way he stomps through the house, he’s spunky, fearless & always looking for a laugh. 💙

After a fall at home, 1-year-old River was rushed to Rady Children's when doctors discovered he had a serious brain bleed.

Thanks to his mom's quick instincts, a Life Flight helicopter transport and the fast response of a multidisciplinary team, River received the urgent care he needed when every minute mattered. Pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Jillian Plonsker performed the surgery that helped save his life, while Dr. Raveen Raviendran and the PICU team cared for him during the critical days that followed.

River's recovery journey took strength, patience and hard work. After surgery, he had to relearn how to sit up, crawl and walk. With support from his care team and months of rehabilitation, River continued to make progress one step at a time.

Today, River is thriving. He loves trucks, trains and airplanes, dancing and playing with his big brother, Forest. While he still attends physical therapy, most people would never know everything he has overcome.

“I’m glad I chose not to hesitate, trusted myself and escalated things to the highest level possible. It saved his life,” says River’s mom, Didar. ”Listen to your gut. If you feel something is wrong, advocate for your child.”
