Meet the innovative technology our Pediatric Neurosurgical skull-based team is using to help plan, visualize, and perform some of the most complex surgeries at Rady Children’s Health.👇

🤖 A pioneering neurosurgical robot that made its pediatric debut in our OR. It attaches to the operating table and develops a treatment trajectory with incredible precision.

🔬 Head-mounted displays are attached to either the surgical microscope or endoscope to give neurosurgeons another way to visualize anatomy during procedures. We have been pioneering these technologies for over 25 years.

🧠 3D models are created from each child’s unique scan to help our teams better understand critical neurovascular structures and review possible approaches before entering the OR.

As the only pediatric skull base center on the West Coast, at the #1 Children’s Hospital in the Western United States, we care for children with some of the most complex conditions involving the brain and skull base.

In pediatric neurosurgery, innovation isn’t just about what’s next. It’s about finding better ways to care for kids today.

The simple act of human touch can regulate vital signs & strengthen the bond between a baby & their caregiver. Skin-to-skin contact, also known as kangaroo care, offers meaningful benefits for babies, including steadier heart rates, more regulated body temperatures, deeper sleep & a stronger sense of connection with their caregivers.

While often used with premature or low-birth-weight infants, kangaroo care can benefits all babies—including those with congenital heart disease.

We’re proud to offer this practice & education to our nurses & families in the CTICU, helping make every moment of connection count. 💙

After two & a half years of procedures, chemotherapy, transfusions & hospital stays, Ethan finally rang the bell! 🔔

When Ethan started getting low grade fevers, bruising & other symptoms, his family turned to Rady Children’s Health in San Diego. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Dr. Kuo, Dr. Wong & the rest of Ethan’s care team treated more than his diagnosis. They celebrated his milestones, welcomed his big sister Maddie into his journey & helped his family imagine a future beyond cancer.

Today, Ethan is in remission & back to playing, swimming & dreaming about what’s next. 💙

Meet Divya. 👋 At 15, she underwent an eight-hour spinal fusion surgery to correct severe scoliosis.

It started with a slight curve found during a routine physical. A rapid growth spurt caused the curve to progress quickly, leading her family to Dr. Upasani, the Director of the Pediatric Orthopedics and Scoliosis Clinical Fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego.

Six months later, Divya is thriving and growing stronger every day through physical therapy. The experience changed her life in more ways than one.

"She has a new perspective on pain management and the impact doctors and surgeons can have on people's lives," her mom said. "She's even interested in pursuing a career in medicine." 🌟

Recently, Rady Children's Health joined Family Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C., where families from Orange County and San Diego shared their powerful stories with policymakers to champion children's futures.

Orange County patient Kareem Nguyen, a five-year-old with cerebral palsy and multiple diagnoses, was joined by his mom, Jessica, and sister, Gidget. Jessica shared Kareem's story of treatment and care at Rady Children's Health in Orange County, and how vital government-funded health coverage is for families with children who have complex, chronic conditions.

Mario Luna is a patient at Rady Children's Health - San Diego, where he was treated for cardiomyopathy and received a heart transplant. Thanks to the care and support made possible through government-funded health coverage, Mario is now a thriving 17-year-old.

We're so grateful for these families, who took the time to lend their voices to our advocacy efforts — leaving a lasting impression on policymakers in D.C.
