When Blake joined Aveanna in 2024 after a 6-month stay in the NICU, he instantly formed a connection with Nurse Kaitlyn.

Through the years, she's been his cheerleader for every developmental milestone, an advocate for his care, and a devoted part of his Aveana team. With Blake's complex medical and respiratory needs, Kaitlyn's guidance has given his family stability in his care journey since leaving the hospital.

"Knowing Blake has a nurse who treats him with such kindness, patience, and genuine care gives our family so much peace of mind," said his family. "We are truly grateful for everything she does—not just for Blake, but for our entire family. She has made such a positive difference our lives."

Thank you to all our Aveanna nurses for the incredible care, compassion, and dedication you show patients like Blake every day.

This week's spotlight is for Luisa, one of our amazing Clinical Supervisors!

With Aveanna: 4 years

In San Diego: 3 years

What inspired you to work in healthcare?
Working as a receptionist in an orthopedic surgeon’s office as my first job inspired me to pursue healthcare since I always have been passionate about helping people, especially during vulnerable times.

Favorite part of your role?
The most rewarding part of my role is being able to support patients and their families during important moments in their care.

Favorite San Diego activity?
The water!! I moved here from Las Vegas for the ocean! So paddleboarding, boogie boarding, swimming, hanging out for hours at the beach, day or night.. bonfires.. anything water/beach related in San Diego. I am yet to learn how to surf!

Fun Fact: I'm secretly an aspiring filmmaker/photographer.

Outside of work: You’ll find me venturing out, camera in hand, searching for beautiful places and good stories; traveling, watching movies; trying new restaurants or playing video/board games with my son.

This week, it's Operations Specialist Michele's turn for the spotlight!

What inspired you to work in healthcare?
My passion for healthcare grew from seeing how important compassionate care and advocacy are for families navigating medical challenges.

Favorite part of your role?
My favorite part of my role is knowing that the work I do behind the scenes directly impacts patient care. I enjoy supporting our clinical teams, ensuring compliance, solving problems, and helping families get the resources they need. I especially love building relationships with patients, families, and referral sources and being able to advocate for those who need additional support.

Favorite San Diego activity?
Cali cafe & then walking at sunset cliffs

Fun Fact:
My camera roll is mostly photos of my daughter, scenic views, and screenshots of things I meant to remember.

Outside of work:
You'll find me outside somewhere with my daughter, in my house cleaning, or coloring.

Throughout August, Aveanna recognizes Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month. This important observance provides an opportunity to increase understanding of SMA, raise awareness about the condition, and honor the individuals and families whose lives are impacted by it.

SMA is a genetic neuromuscular disorder that gradually weakens the muscles responsible for movement and everyday activities. It can affect functions such as walking, eating, and breathing. In the United States, SMA is estimated to affect approximately one in every 15,000 births.

This month, we join communities across the country in recognizing those affected by SMA, celebrating their resilience, and encouraging greater awareness, education, and support for individuals living with the condition.

What inspired you to work in healthcare?
I wanted to be a part of something that makes a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Even though I don’t provide direct patient care, I enjoy helping to ensure patients receive the care and support they need.

Favorite part of your role?
Staffing cases and helping make sure patients are covered and getting the care they need.

Favorite San Diego activity?
Riding Jet Skis

Fun Fact: The " Luz" in my name was my great grandma's first name and "Elena" was my grandma's middle name.

Outside of work: You'll find me at Disneyland.
