What happens when OCD latches onto your sense of justice? Justice sensitivity is a common trait of ADHD and autism, but it’s less acknowledged as a part of OCD. This is, in part, because OCD is often left out of conversations around neurodiversity even though it falls under the umbrella. OCD can be confusing to understand as a form of neurodivergence because it can feel dismissive of the debilitating experience of the obsessive-compulsive cycle. A disability model can also bring up concerns about OCD “becoming one’s identity” or encouraging folks that compulsions are “okay” and not something to be worked on as intensely because it is just “who they are.” Here, we can learn a lot from Autistic advocates, lived experience, and disability justice: that two things can be true at once: there can be challenges and distress associated with a neurotype *and* there can be strengths and shared experiences that are morally neutral. This shift also allows us to understand the importance of intersecting identities and systems of oppression in informing a more holistic understanding of OCD. We (Allyson and Reece Reece Thomas, MS, CMHC ) teamed up to create this post to explore overlaps we’ve observed between OCD and justice sensitivity, and are excited to open up this conversation! Have you noticed this overlap in your lived experience? What are your thoughts? Comment below!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, as an ADHDer with OCD, I can see how RSD shows up in sooo many OCD themes. That’s not to say it’s the same thing or everyone experiences both, this is simply one overlap I’ve been noticing a lot lately.

Can you relate?? I want to hear your thoughts on this!

One thing I love about Justice based ERP (created by Dr. Caitlin Pinciotti) is that it asks us to think about the actual exposure we are asking clients to engage in and the broader social implications/ messaging around said exposure.

ERP is highly effective in treating OCD for many people. I use it in my own practice and it was apart of my own journey with OCD.

And- the way we apply it matters. We need to be designing exposures that do not further stigmatize intentionally marginalized groups of people.

We need to be mindful of what assumptions and stereotypes are being reflected in the exposures we choose.

And in my opinion, beyond justice based ERP, we need to look beyond the stereotypes themselves and the societal conditions that fuel the fears that many people with OCD experience (see my previous posts on the cultural influences of OCD themes).

Thoughts? Have you heard of Justice Based ERP? What other examples might this lens be needed in?

If you’re looking for an OCD specialist with an intersectional and neurodiversity affirming lens- we got you! Parisa on my team has two spots open for the first time in many months. Visit the link in my bio to connect with us or copy and paste my website URL:

How chic of you to recover in a world that keeps trying to convince you that you’re only worth something if you’re smaller.

You deserve a colorful, expansive life. Not one trapped in monotony, fear and fake smiles.

It’s possible to heal from an ED- even if you think you’re not sick enough, even if you’ve tried a dozen times and nothing has worked. There is always hope. There’s always another path forward. Reach out via the link in my bio to become a client or access our free resources.

PS- no besties pictured were actually fasting😊

Feeling silly might delete later 😅 but for real protect your recovery at all costs. Stop looking at people shrinking. Stop engaging with it. It’s only keeping you focused on your ED and body image.

Shift your focus to the things that you will look back on life when you’re 80 and wish you had more time. For me- that’s my kiddo, friends, family, nature, my pup, enjoying foods and drinks that I love, adventuring, traveling, crafting, so much more.

You’re worth a full, rich, meaningful life and unfortunately that will never happen with an ED. Not to the extent that is possible at least.

If you’re looking to start therapy you’re so brave. My practice has a couple openings, check us out if you’re in CA, WA, MD, UT or FL!

Elizabeth’s story is something we all need to hear. There are not enough stories of people going through recovery from an ED while food insecure- despite food insecurity being a top reason for eating disorder development.

Elizabeth shares her powerful story and how her experience led her to founding a virtual food pantry- grounded in dignity and choice.

About Elizabeth Ayiku:
Elizabeth is a filmmaker, food justice organizer, and founder of , a nonprofit advancing food equity and providing free, culturally competent support to historically marginalized communities. Based in Los Angeles, she works to dismantle systemic barriers to mental health and well being, with a focus on meeting basic needs first.

She founded the Me Little Me Foundation in response to her own lived experience with food insecurity, racial inequity, and a deep understanding of the gaps in support for marginalized communities.

Her personal journey fuels her unwavering commitment to social justice and community care.

The “perfect mother” isn’t real. But the pressure to be her is everywhere.

And if you’re navigating perinatal or postpartum OCD, that pressure becomes fuel for intrusive thoughts and compulsions.

Intrusive thoughts get mistaken for danger.
Everyday doubt turns into constant checking.
Love gets tangled up with fear and responsibility.

Add in social media, unrealistic expectations and a culture that tells mothers they should be able to do it all (intensive motherhood ideology) without help… and it makes sense so many parents are silently struggling.

You’re responding to an impossible standard and OCD is REALLY good at exploiting that.

There’s nothing wrong with needing support.

We SHOULD question the narratives we’ve been handed about what makes a “good” mother.

If this resonates, you’re not alone and this is something that can be treated with the right kind of care.
