This is what corneal crosslinking looks like. It uses liquid riboflavin (vitamin B2) and ultraviolet (UV) light to stiffen and strengthen the cornea. Its goal is to halt the progression of conditions like keratoconus, preventing further vision loss and potential need for corneal transplants! This video was taken in our surgery room and followed with post-op care as we prep for part 2 of the CREATE protocol.

Radial Keratotomy (RK) repair focuses on addressing complications and vision changes that can occur after the refractive surgery.

Corneal Crosslinking is one of the main portions of how to treat Keratoconus that involves saturating the eye in Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) then setting the eye under a UV light to stop the keratoconus progression and strengthen the cornea. While some people believe that it is, It is not a surgery or procedure that involves restoring the cornea to restore the vision it is simply a procedure that aims to stop the progression of Keratoconus. Further treatment of prescription and vision will be required to reshape the cornea such as topographic guided ablation which is a procedure that we do alongside Crosslinking. It must be stressed that Corneal Crosslinking only aims to stop the progression of Keratoconus since the disease is a rapidly progressive in it's nature.

Post-LASIK ectasia, a rare but serious complication, is a progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea that can lead to distorted vision, similar to keratoconus, and is believed to be caused by weakening of the cornea during LASIK surgery. Some people also categorize Keratoconus as a version of cornea ectasia. Dr. Motwani goes more in depth on the distinctions and characteristics of both.

This video demonstrates the epithelial (epi) cell removal process used in ophthalmic surgeries and corneal procedures. Epithelial cell removal is commonly performed during refractive surgeries and corneal treatments to improve surgical access and healing outcomes.
