You can know something logically and still not feel like it’s true.
You can know you were just a child, and still carry the shame.
Know you don’t have to be perfect, and still panic when you disappoint someone.
Know you’re lovable, and still brace yourself for rejection.
That’s one of the frustrating parts of complex trauma.
The beliefs we develop through repeated experiences can become so deeply wired that they stop feeling like beliefs at all. They just feel like who we are.
EMDR can help us go back to the experiences where those beliefs took root and give the brain an opportunity to process them differently.
Not to convince yourself that nothing bad happened..
But to begin separating what happened to you from what you came to believe about yourself because of it.
“I was the problem” can become “I was a child trying to survive.”
“I have to keep everyone happy” can become “Other people’s emotions aren’t mine to manage.”
“I’m broken” can become “I adapted and I can heal.”
The memory may stay. The meaning you carry from it can change.
At Balance & Bloom Therapy, our trauma therapists use EMDR and other trauma-informed approaches to help clients work through PTSD, CPTSD, anxiety, people-pleasing, perfectionism, and the patterns that often come with them.
