So many of us are called to birth work because of our own birth experiences. Kanya, like many of us, had to face her fears and her own birth trauma , before she felt prepared to step into her calling as a birth attendant. From scared to capable. From capable to called. 13 weeks ago she felt like the "newbie" in the room. To being selected for a competitive doula training program at UVM Medical Center. This is what happens when you let your wounds become your medicine.

This is what it looks like when someone stops doubting their calling and starts building it. Maria came into UTJ feeling lost and frustrated, within 13 weeks she left UTJ with a concrete plan, a business, and a community behind her. Today she is officially enrolled in Midwifery School. We’re so proud of you Maria!

Save the date 🌻

We are gathering once again for our 3rd bi-annual UTJ Reunion and Partera Initiation Ceremony, March 25 to 28, 2027 at Surprise Farm Retreat Center in San Diego County.

This sacred gathering is open to all UTJ cohorts, from our very first circle in Cohort 1 through our newest parteras stepping forward in Cohort 6. We will reconnect as a community, celebrate the journeys that brought us here, and honor our newly graduated parteras in ceremony.

Here's a glimpse of what awaits us:

Thursday, March 25: Arrival and Welcome Circle
Friday, March 26: Temascal and Teaching Platicas
Saturday, March 27: Partera Initiation Ceremony
Sunday, March 28: Closing Circle

How do you define the work of the Partera ?

This definition comes from my own walk .It's what I've come to learn and know from the unfolding, winding journey that is midwifery, a knowing I could have only discovered as I discovered myself as a Partera.

I use the term Partera because in my Mexican culture, the Partera is not just a profession. The Partera is seen as a thread of the community. Being a Partera was never something I chose the way you choose a career path. It chose me. It asked me to show up not just for births, but for the full arc of life. The losses, the transitions, the moments when a family needs someone who can hold space with both humility and boldness at once.

This is the heart of what I try to pass on through Unveiling the Journey, my mentorship for aspiring Parteras and birthworkers. It's not just about clinical skills, though we cover those deeply. It's about remembering what this work actually asks of us and why so many of us feel called rather than employed.

Unveiling the Journey ✨

A Mentorship for Aspiring Parteras + Birthworkers

This is our 6th year of Unveiling the Journey.
Over 100 mentees have walked through this container. I have watched members from cohorts 1, 2, and 3 complete midwifery school, graduate, and open their own practices, now catching babies of their own.

I remember them at the beginning. Scared. Tentative. Full of uncertainty. I saw what they could not yet see in themselves ...

UTJ was never really about me as a mentor. It is about the friendships, the community, the web we weave together, thread by thread, cohort by cohort.

This mentorship is one of my greatest sources of pride. It did not come from a business plan. It came to me in my dreams. My prayers told me this container was needed long before I understood why.

Unveiling the Journey is a 13 week mentorship circle for aspiring birthworkers and parteras.

A space to explore:

🌀 Midwifery through the lens of social justice, equity, and cultural reverence
