She was doing everything "right" β salads, cutting the w**e, watching every calorie. And the scale kept climbing anyway.
If that's you, here's what I need you to hear: this isn't a willpower problem. It's a biochemistry problem. And there's one hormone almost nobody talks about that might be running the whole show. π
Everyone blames estrogen for menopause weight gain. Fair β it plays a role. But cortisol (your stress hormone) is the one that rarely makes it onto the whiteboard, and it might be the bigger lever for that stubborn belly fat specifically.
Here's the mechanism: progesterone is your natural cortisol buffer. It keeps your stress response in check. But progesterone is one of the first hormones to decline in perimenopause β so as it drops, cortisol runs higher and stays elevated longer. π
Chronically high cortisol:

πΉ Raises blood sugar on purpose, for "quick energy"
πΉ Spikes insulin β a fat-storing hormone
Now you're stuck in a loop: more cortisol β more visceral fat β more inflammation β more insulin resistance β more cortisol. π
I had a patient (we'll call her Denise) convinced she had a thyroid problem. Her labs were perfect. But her cortisol pattern? Backwards β low in the morning, spiking at night. She was also doing intense workouts 4-5x/week on a restricted diet, adding fuel to the fire. π₯
We didn't restrict her further. We fixed her cortisol rhythm, adjusted her training, and got her eating MORE β she went from 1,300 to 1,800 calories. Within two months, her clothes fit differently. Not from eating less. Because her body finally felt safe. π
So if you've been told to just try harder β hear this: you're not crazy, and you're not doing it wrong. Your body needs a different approach at this stage. Lower inflammatory foods, more protein, strength over chronic cardio, and real support for your stress hormones. πͺ
