This article highlights two recent comparative studies, Dalhuisen et al. (Netherlands) and ASCERTAIN-TRD (North America), both of which found rTMS more effective than medication. In Dalhuisen et al.’s study, rTMS significantly outperformed medication. These findings suggest rTMS should be considered earlier in the treatment algorithm for TRD, especially given its superior tolerability compared to other treatments like electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). However, further research is needed to refine its positioning in the treatment sequence and to compare it with other emerging therapies.
