A question I’m often asked is “How do I know if my urge to exercise is rooted in autism or the eating disorder?”

My response? It’s rooted in BOTH.

Firstly, we must remember that eating “disorders” are adaptations. The adaptation itself is rooted in autism. It represents a desperate attempt to create safety in, and make sense of, a world built for neurotypicals.

Through this lens, we see the eating adaptation not as a “comorbidity,” but as a manifestation of unaccommodated neurodivergence.

So the question “is the movement coming from the autism or the ED?” keeps us stuck because there is no concrete distinction.

The point of discovery is not to eliminate behaviors, but to give them a new manifestation. In the context of exercise, the goal is not to eliminate the movement urge, but to CHANNEL it. We must give the fight-or-flight energy a new outlet.

In my upcoming Discovery Talk, I guide you to creating a relationship with movement that aligns with your neurodivergent nervous system. Not by forcing yourself to rest, not by taking “opposite action,” and not by “surfing the urge.”

What you’ll walk away with (pun intended)👇

✅ A radical reframe in how you understand movement so you can stop fighting your nervous system and start working with it
✅ Neurodiversity-affirming strategies to change your exercise routines without the rules of traditional recovery frameworks
✅ A new identity around movement so you can replace routines that no longer serve you with habits that actually align with you as a whole, unique person
✅ Clear action steps to create a relationship with movement that feels genuinely yours rather than another treatment protocol

If you’re autistic in ED recovery (discovery) and feel a constant urge to move, you’ve likely been told you struggle with “compulsive” exercise. You may even believe you have an exercise “addiction.”

But I’m going to be really blunt with you: there’s no such thing as “compulsive” exercise. You’re also not “addicted.”

I realize this directly contradicts everything you may have been conditioned to believe about your relationship with movement, and that’s kinda the point…

I’m also willing to bet that traditional approaches to “fix” your exercise behaviors haven’t really done anything, have they?

So allow me to share a powerful reframe with you. Just as I view eating “disorders” as eating adaptations, I invite you to replace the term “compulsive” exercise with adaptive exercise. Why?

Because the only reason you’re engaging in whatever movement routines your life currently revolves around is because you’re trying to feel safe.

You’re trying to regulate your neurodivergent nervous system in the only way you know how.

And if you’re anything like I was, your identity has become intertwined with being “healthy,” “athletic,” and “fit.”

This is why blanket statements like “force yourself to rest” and “take opposite action” haven’t worked for you. Not to mention, they massively trigger PDA 😳

So how DO you create a relationship with movement that respects your neurodivergent needs while staying within the boundaries of an aligned existence?

This is exactly what you’ll learn in my upcoming Discovery Talk! We’re live on Tuesday 4 August at 6pm CET, and if you buy a VIP access pass, you’ll get to join our live Q&A and hot seat coaching the next day!

✨“Compulsive” Exercise or Adaptive Exercise? ✨

I‘m beyond excited to be creating a new series called Discovery Talks! These are hyper-focused sessions where we dive DEEP into the most pertinent topics related to neurodivergence and eating disorders.

Since I get a LOT of questions/requests about exercise in autistic ED recovery, that’s what our very first discovery talk is all about!

It’s called “Compulsive” Exercise or Adaptive Exercise? and in it, you’ll learn how to create your UNIQUE version of movement freedom as a neurodivergent person.

Together, we will cover:
🔥 Why autistic and ADHD people are more likely to struggle with exercise
🔥 Why “compulsive movement” is actually ADAPTIVE movement, and how that distinction changes EVERYTHING on the discovery journey
🔥 Why you’re not “addicted” to exercise – you’ve built an identity around it, and identities can be rewritten
🔥 How to CHANNEL your neurodivergent energy into a relationship with movement that feels like genuine freedom rather than another set of “recovery rules”
🔥 Practical “invitations for curiosity” that are PDA-affirming strategies to actually IMPLEMENT everything you learn

This is a live community experience on Tuesday 4 August @ 6pm CET, and if you grab the VIP access pass, you’ll get to join our live Q&A and hot seat coaching the next day!

Something that’s not talked about enough is the identity crisis that arises when going through eating disorder recovery. Especially for deeply philosophical, existential autistic thinkers, taking off the mask of the ED can make you feel “exposed.” And that’s terrifying.

I grew up feeling so different – so fundamentally “wrong” – that the eating disorder became something I could finally do “right.” It became a way for me to “compensate” for never feeling good enough.

The rules and routines of anorexia gave me boundaries in a boundless world, a sense of direction and purpose at a time when I was drowning in existential angst.

When I embarked on the discovery journey (which, at the time, I still saw as “recovery”) I had a massive identity crisis.

For so many years, I had been “the perfect healthy eater.” I had identified as the “athlete,” the “fit one,” and the “healthy one.” Academically, I was the “perfect student.”

When I had to leave school to go to treatment, being forced to eat more, gain weight, and do all the other things that accompany ED recovery, I was equally forced to let go of all these labels. I was forced to take off the masks I’d hidden behind for countless years.

This process – discovering who I truly was without labels – is the journey I take you on in my memoir Rainbow Girl. You’ll learn why traditional ED treatment fails, the role of undiagnosed neurodivergence and PDA, and ultimately, the steps I took to begin liv(ing) label free.

Rainbow Girl is available in all formats – so whether you prefer audiobooks, physical books, or eBooks, dive into my memoir of autism and anorexia at livlabelfreebooks.com! 🌈

P.S. If you’ve already read Rainbow Girl (and any of my other books!) it would mean SO much if you could leave a positive rating + review on Amazon and Goodreads. Not only does your review support me as a small neurodivergent author, but it helps other people find my words. I truly believe that together, we CAN and WILL create more humane, neurodiversity-affirming approaches to freedom 💖

*Reposting my recent reels as a carousel bc I cannot emphasize this perspective enough!!

Whenever I read about autism and eating disorders, I come across the following statement: We must adapt ED treatment for autistic people.

I disagree, and here’s why👇

The first problem lies in the word “treatment” – this term implies that someone is “disordered” and needs to be “cured.” However, when we look at food-related challenges as eating ADAPTATIONS, we discover the individual was never broken to begin with. They have adapted to feel safe in the only way they know how.

Traditional approaches do not work for neurodivergent people, one of the reasons being a lack of understanding neurodivergence. On a grander scale, it’s a lack of being PERSON-CENTERED.

If the system is founded on protocols, merely “adapting” these protocols is not enough. Neurodiversity-affirming care requires a COMPLETELY NEW PARADIGM – it requires us to view eating “disorders” as The Adaptive Eating Spectrum (TAES). TAES acknowledges that what are labeled as “ED behaviors” are not pathologies to be eliminated, but creative solutions to cope with the profound challenges of being human.

Adaptive doesn’t imply certain behaviors aren’t harmful. Adaptive can also mean maladaptive. After all, many adaptive eating behaviors directly sacrifice someone’s safety! This includes caloric restriction and excessive exercise as in anorexia, but TAES applies to the full spectrum of adaptive eating experiences – including ARFID, binge eating, bulimia, etc. All of these eating adaptations can be understood as a spectrum with varying presentations across individuals.

The most revolutionary aspect of my adaptive eating spectrum model is that we can stop trying to squeeze infinite beings into finite boxes. Instead, we can begin to see individuals as highly adaptive beings. And when we see someone as a highly adaptive being, we can support them in adapting away from unhealthy coping mechanisms and into an aligned version of themselves.
