The Caribbean Association for Rheumatology mourns the passing of Shelley Weir, founder of the Hope Foundation of Barbados, a remarkable patient advocate, leader, and cherished friend of our Caribbean rheumatology community.

Through the Hope Foundation, Shelley championed the needs of people living with lupus, arthritis, and sickle cell disease, working tirelessly to improve education, support, and advocacy for patients across Barbados and the wider Caribbean. She believed deeply in bringing patients and healthcare professionals together—creating spaces where both could learn from one another and ensuring that the patient voice was heard and valued.

Shelley was a courageous advocate who challenged us to do better and spoke with conviction for the communities she served. Her loss will be deeply felt.

CAR extends our heartfelt condolences to Shelley’s family, friends, colleagues, the Hope Foundation community, and the many people whose lives she touched.

May her courage, compassion, and commitment to advocacy continue to inspire us. Rest in peace, Shelley.
