Did you know that distracted driving is one of the most common driver-related factors in fatal crashes?

Even just a few seconds to send a text can have devastating consequences. For commercial motor vehicle drivers, the stakes are even higher due to vehicle size, weight, and longer braking distances.

This video provides a preview of the distracted driving module from Safe Haul: Navigating U.S. Regulations for CMV Drivers. The module covers the risks and consequences of distracted driving and practical strategies to stay safe on the road.

Developed by UC San Diego TREDS with funding from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Safe Haul provides practical, self-paced training to help drivers stay current on U.S. CMV regulations and support safe driving practices.

❌ Talking on a hands-free phone can increase crash risk by up to 4x—the same as talking on a handheld phone.

Hands-free isn’t risk-free.

Even if your hands are on the wheel, your mind is on the conversation. That’s called cognitive distraction—and it can slow reaction time, reduce awareness, and cause you to miss what’s happening on the road.

Stay focused. Stay safe. 🚗

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month

In 2024, distracted driving killed 3,208 people in the U.S.—that’s 3,208 too many.

Distraction isn’t just texting. It’s using your phone for GPS, calls, social media, and more. At 55 mph, just five seconds of inattention is like driving the length of a football field blindfolded.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month!!! When drivers take their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, lives can change forever. We’re reminding our community that safety starts with each of us. Put the phone down, limit distractions, and help people get home safely.
