Masking is the constant, often unconscious act of suppressing/camouflaging autistic traits to fit in.

This can look like forcing eye contact, scripting conversations, mimicking facial expressions that don’t come naturally, resisting stimming.

It’s exhausting because it take extra effort and it’s happening on top of everything else you’re doing, all day, every social interaction.

This is also a huge reason autism in women gets missed for decades, the exhaustion gets written off as burnout, depression, or anxiety instead of what it is.

Perfectionism, but make it neurodivergent.

For many ADHD and autistic adults, perfectionism is less about wanting everything to be flawless and more about fear of getting it wrong, difficulty knowing when something is “done,” and needing the conditions to feel just right before starting.

Rejection sensitivity isn’t officially a diagnosis. But many people experience it and if you have ADHD or autism, it far more likely to show up.

New research is starting to explore RSD more closely. The biggest finding isn’t about the rejection itself but about the withdrawal that happens in anticipation of rejection. The idea that you could be rejected leads people to shrinking their lives down to avoid the possibility of it happening again.

More recent research has supported that RSD is physical as your nervous system is responding to what feels like a threat. Sensations like burning, nausea, chest tightness, and paralysis are common.

For many these patterns go back to early experiences of rejection, sometimes from caregivers, that taught the nervous system to brace for rejection.

If you’ve wondered why criticism affects you in a way it doesn’t seem to affect other people, this may be why.
