Rehab United

Rehab United Specializing in physical therapy, massage therapy, and more with eight locations in San Diego.

In the summer of 1991, their final summer in high school together before Sean went off to college, “The Brothers Hill” had planned 3 months of friends, sports, travel and fun. On June 8th, their plans came to a halt when Sean received a scary phone call from a family friend that Bryan had been hurt badly during an indoor soccer game and to await another phone call with more details. After what see

med like hours of waiting, Sean finally received a call from their mother stating that Bryan had badly broken his femur and doctors were testing to determine the extent of the injury. It was soon determined that nerves and a major artery were barely missed, but Bryan would require extensive surgery and physical therapy in the hospital for a minimum of one week before he would even be allowed to go home. Sean dropped everything and spent the week in the hospital with Bryan to help him rehabilitate alongside Bryan’s physical therapist. Sean thrived on finding ways to encourage Bryan and guide him just to walk again. The best part was that it didn’t feel like work for Sean –it was fun! Bryan recognized and felt the same amazing experience from the patient’s perspective. Throughout the week they solidified themselves as a life-long team who would encourage each other unconditionally. They talked about how fun it would be in the future to provide the same care and encouragement to others as that “team”. During that week together in the hospital, Sean and Bryan realized they had found their calling – they were determined not only to become Physical Therapists, but to someday open their own practice together and provide a quality of care for their clients never encountered before. Sean and Bryan wanted to provide not just treatment services, but a global treatment philosophy founded on encouragement, empathy, passion, and giving the very best of themselves to others. With their mother joining them from Arizona to help get started, their dream of a family private practice become reality exactly twelve years and one day after Bryan’s “life-changing injury”! On June 9th, 2003, they opened Rehab United Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy, Inc.!

Did you know you have tiny crystals living in your ears? And that when they move to the wrong place, your whole world starts spinning? 😵‍💫

These crystals — called otoliths — sit in your inner ear and help your brain understand gravity and movement. When they migrate into one of the ear's semicircular canals where they don't belong, it disrupts the signals your brain receives and triggers vertigo: that intense sensation that the room is spinning even when you're completely still.

This is called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), and it's one of the most common causes of dizziness — and one of the most treatable.

Physical therapists trained in vestibular rehab can perform specific repositioning maneuvers to guide those crystals back where they belong, often bringing significant relief in just a few sessions. No medication, no guessing — just targeted, hands-on care.

If spinning is your new normal, PT can help you find solid ground again.

Why Soft Tissue Work Matters
Don’t skip soft tissue work on the lateral lower leg!

Peroneus longus and brevis can become tight, irritated, or restricted after overuse or lateral ankle sprains. Gentle soft tissue work with a massage ball or your hands can:

• Improve local blood flow
• Reduce adhesions and soreness
• Prep the muscles for strength and balance work

Combine soft tissue techniques with strengthening and balance drills for best outcomes — mobility + neuromuscular control = stronger, more resilient ankles.

Last Night, our co-founders Sean Hill, PT, MPT, FAFS, CSCS, and Bryan Hill, and our Regional Clinic Director Brittany Hollenbeck, PT, DPT, FAFS, CERP spoke in front of Physical Therapy students

Having the opportunity to sit on a panel and speak with the next generation of physical therapists was an absolute privilege.

The students asked thoughtful questions about the business side of physical therapy—from what it takes to start and grow a successful practice, to how leaders navigate difficult decisions and adapt to an ever-changing healthcare landscape.

We also had the chance to discuss one of our favorite topics: Applied Functional Science (AFS) and the impact it has had on our clinical approach and professional development.

One of the most meaningful conversations centered around the future of the physical therapy industry, including how evolving insurance models continue to influence patient care and business operations.

It’s inspiring to see so many passionate, curious, and driven future PTs preparing to enter the profession. The future of physical therapy is in good hands.

🥹23 years at Rehab United💙

We want to take a moment to thank you ALL. Anyone who have supported us and our mission- to getting people back to doing what the love. And in return, we get to do what we love everyday.

Thank you for trusting us in this journey. Whether you are an aide or a PT, our first patient in our garage, any and all of our returning patients, or even those who have helped us with the construction of our various locations. We could not have done without you!

Cheers to 23 years from the cRUw!

23 years later, the Hill brothers are still leading Rehab United with the same passion, dedication, and commitment that started it all.

For our 23rd anniversary, we talked with Rehab United Co-Founders Bryan and Sean Hill for a special “23 Questions for 23 Years” interview. What began with a single patient in Bryan’s garage has grown into one of the most trusted providers of physical therapy in San Diego with 7 locations—helping thousands of people recover, move better, and get back to the activities they love.

Over the years, Rehab United has become so much more than a physical therapy clinic. It’s been a place where lifelong relationships are built. From Sean treating the Larson boys as kids and later attending their weddings, to Bryan being recognized by a former patient on a ski mountain in France, the memories made along the way have been nothing short of incredible.

And of course, no trip down memory lane would be complete without mentioning the Hill brothers’ legendary Halloween costumes. 🎃

As we celebrate 23 years, we’re filled with gratitude for every patient, family member, and team member who has been part of this journey.

A special thank you goes out to the Rehab United cRUw—past and present. Your compassion, expertise, and commitment to our mission have shaped who we are today. And to our patients: thank you for trusting us during some of life’s most challenging and vulnerable moments. Your resilience inspires us every day, and none of this would have been possible without you.

Here’s to 23 years of healing, community, and helping San Diego move better. We can’t wait to see what the future holds. ❤️

The posterior tibialis plays a critical role in controlling the foot during walking.

Research shows it is most active during the loading response and midstance phases of gait. After heel strike, the muscle turns on eccentrically to control pronation and slow the collapse of the medial arch. As you transition into midstance and push-off, it shifts toward a concentric role, helping re-supinate the foot to create a rigid lever for propulsion.

When the posterior tibialis is not functioning properly, the foot may stay pronated too long, increasing strain along the tibia and contributing to shin splints.

Understanding when this muscle turns on and off during the gait cycle is key for long-term recovery and performance — especially here in San Diego, where walking, running, and outdoor activity are part of daily life.

Although we ALL look GREAT in heels, what are they ACTUALLY doing to our feet? 😜

No one has ever walked out of a night in heels and said "Wow, my feet feel amazing." 👠😬

Because heels shift your entire center of gravity forward, compressing the ball of your foot, shortening your calf muscles, straining your Achilles, and throwing your posture into a forward lean. Over time, this can contribute to plantar fasciitis, bunions, knee pain, and even lower back issues.

One night out? Your feet will survive (barely). A regular habit? That's a different story.

We love a good heel moment. We just want you to walk out of it feeling okay.

Ice, stretch, and give those feet some love afterward, and if pain is becoming a pattern, come see us.
