Medicare open enrollment opens October 15 and runs through December 7. That sounds like plenty of time, right up until it's Thanksgiving and the deadline is next week. π¦
Here's a 6-step checklist to get it done calmly and in the right order:
1οΈβ£ Read your Annual Notice of Change. If you're in a Medicare Advantage or drug plan, it came in September. It lists next year's changes to premiums, copays, drugs and doctors.
2οΈβ£ List your doctors and medications. Confirm your doctors will be in network, and compare drug plans with Medicare's Plan Finder at medicare.gov. Plans change their premiums and drug lists every year, so check even if you were happy this year.
3οΈβ£ Decide how you want primary care to work. If you'd like a direct primary care doctor, Original Medicare with a supplement and drug plan fits best. HMOs fit worst.
4οΈβ£ Leaving Medicare Advantage? Check Medigap first. Supplements don't have an annual enrollment window, and insurers can ask health questions. You may have a guaranteed right if it's your first year in Advantage, your plan is leaving your area, or (in California) your plan is raising its costs significantly, cutting benefits or dropping your doctor. Get a quote BEFORE you switch.
5οΈβ£ Keep Part B and Part D. Even with DPC. They cover your specialists and prescriptions, and dropping them can mean lifelong penalties.
6οΈβ£ Get unbiased help, then decide. HICAP offers free Medicare counseling in California at 1-800-434-0222.
π‘ Miss something? If you're in Medicare Advantage on January 1, you get one more chance to switch between January 1 and March 31.
