You only birth this baby once and you should be informed of all of your choices and how they will affect yourself and your baby. We support all kinds of birth - natural, medicated, Caesarean, VBAC(vaginal birth after caesarean), home, hospital or birth center. Every person must make the choice for the

nselves as to what kind of birth they desire and we, no matter what our views, should support each other with those choices. We are here to answer your questions and help you in any way that we can. Fears associated with childbirth can be removed once you feel informed about what you want and how to achieve it. 𝟭𝟬𝟱: 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶 𝗥𝘆𝗮𝗻⁣

Gerri and I mirror the same thing in both of our work - 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Part of that education is knowing how to pick a provider that is aligned with you and your values. ⁣

So many of us don’t understand the nuance of knowing 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿. Usually at this early part of our pregnancy, we just take who our insurance suggested or stick with our current OB. ⁣

✔️But is your current doctor aligned with the type of birth you are wanting? ⁣

✔️And do you know what the options are for your baby’s birth? ⁣

✔️And do you understand that it is literally your BABY’S birth? Your labor, but their one and only birth experience? ⁣

There are a lot of things to consider because 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵. So many people just think the experts know it all, I will defer to them. But YOU and the expert on your body and your baby. But you may not know that yet.⁣

Many families don’t even know that they most likely won’t even be the one attending your birth - which means you need to ask even more questions about their practice. ⁣

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘁 - it’s not too early. Reach out to your local birth educators and ask them what the options are in your area and where you should start your education journey!⁣

𝟭𝟬𝟱: 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶 𝗥𝘆𝗮𝗻⁣

You can never fully describe what the right mentor can do for your life. I don’t believe in coincidences. I have full faith that what we need will show up at the right time 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝘁. I know I have been guilty of not being ready to make changes in my life so when the “lifeboat” showed up, I let it go past because it felt too hard at the time to take the rope.⁣

Gerri and I have had similar life experiences. What she had lived through already 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼. Not only did she lend an ear when I needed one but I felt her support when I built a foundation for my family and took the leap in creating a business to support them.⁣

I know I speak for all of the doulas that she has trained when I say that 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. Her kindness and love are let by everyone and leave a lasting impression.⁣

Today in my Legacy Mentor Series, I get to 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗶 𝗥𝘆𝗮𝗻. I met Gerri in the fall of 2008 when I took my first Doula training. That weekend switched my new life into high gear and thankfully, Gerri became a lifelong mentor and friend. I had no idea what was about to unfold.⁣

Gerri has been in birth work since her own births pointed her towards it. She was a doula before being a doula was a thing! Gerri has shaped San Diego’s birth community by being a doula, midwife, forming and running a non profit and then a midwifery school. She is a current doula trainer with DONA and 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿. ⁣

Gerri shares her core “soapbox” message: i𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲. We discuss how being heard, respected, and centered during birth impacts parenting, postpartum wellbeing, and even trauma, and why families need information to make true informed choices. ⁣

We also cover mentorship, 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, preventing burnout by not working harder than clients, and living with curiosity and humility. One of the main reasons for getting formal childbirth education is to 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝗽 𝘀𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 or shocked when in the hospital. By not understanding how this corporation works ahead of time, new parents can be caught off guard and have a more bumpy transition into parenthood.⁣

𝗡𝗶𝗸𝗸𝗶 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 and frankly, nonsense, with some firm advocacy. This was evident from the hospital tour right through discharge. ⁣

But when you understand how the system works, you aren’t intimidated by it and it is much easier to get the staff on board for what is going to work for your family. Nikki and her husband were able to take in the information offered 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀. Yay for getting educated!⁣

Today I welcome back Nikki (from episode 70) to share what shifted after her fertility journey - like getting pregnant and having a baby! There is so much in this episode! While Nikki is sharing her birth story, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗺. Nikki describes fears shaped by the negative birth and postpartum stories that we all cannot seem to escape. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗺 before classes began and getting more education and advocacy around birth were some big value decisions she brought with her. She also hired an awesome doula who helped her navigate the ups and downs of labor and postpartum.

Going with the flow of what her birth presented included an induction which was not in her ideal birth plan. 𝗦𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 and you’ll hear how she navigated what she could not control. Learning to surrender is a lesson every parent learns but sometimes we have to do it the hard way - like most of us. One of the things that is so important for parenting and especially the postpartum time, is that 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗴𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵. This is so neglected in our country and we remind parents of this several times in our Hypnobirthing series.⁣

The mom gets so 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, 𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 - 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 is just as new for the other parent and they have needs too. Not getting good sleep, supporting a new baby and all of the attention and care is focused on the parent who just gave birth. ⁣

We ask dads and partners to reach out ahead of the birth, to “other parents” who have gone through a postpartum time and 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱. It’s important to ask for advice, suggestions and encouragement. It’s even better to ask that you can call them in “real moments of hard” to get support. ⁣

When partners have found like minded parents ahead of the postpartum, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁.⁣

In both Birth and Postpartum doula trainings, there’s a common idea that comes up for women who have never had a baby before. Most of them feel less than, or 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀. As if they are lacking, won’t do a good job or know what to do in what could be an unknown situation.⁣

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. In a “village or community” it is about loving someone through the complicated spaces or weak moments. We don’t have to have an experience to hold space and love someone through an experience. ⁣

𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝗽, 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲. That is all that is required. We have amazing trainings and social media now that can build our skills - but it is about holding a communal space for those in need. We can all do that.⁣

We pick the feeling we want in the room and what we want our baby to feel throughout their birth experience, and it 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗶𝘃𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴.⁣

Sometimes birth maps out pretty close to our image of it. And other times, we need to be open to how focusing on the feeling we want, guides the decisions are things unfold.⁣

In today’s show, I got to talk with Trevor, getting his take on his son’s birth story. As a dad watching from the sidelines, 𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘂𝗽 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Before we get into the birth story, Trevor shares his fears and worries leading up to the birth and postpartum time. He also shares 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 one of his friends gave him off the cuff, that changed how he interacts with his new family.⁣

Trevor and I really enjoyed a lot of banter in our Hypnobirthing class and that humor carried over to their birth. 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗷𝗼𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 with the nurses and midwife even through the challenging parts of labor. He also valued what his doula brought in terms of advocacy and focus.⁣

Trevor knew that there were many ways to the finish line and he and his wife took some more natural techniques along the way, much to the eye rolling of the staff. But they were good sports about it and supported the wishes. After hearing about their labor, and the extended pushing time, you will understand why 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁! ⁣

In today’s show, Brittany, a postpartum doula is here to share her home birth story. Brittany came into classes with a lot of “after birth experience and knowledge” due to supporting so many women over the years. But she and her husband were 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲.⁣

She hired a midwife and a doula and planned for all things homebirth. Brittany developed a deep sense of trust in her baby and her body during pregnancy. Then a little hiccup arose and the trust was put to the test. I was impressed in her ability to pivot and stay present with what was happening so 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱.⁣

Brittany shares her transition into motherhood and emphasizes that 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗯𝘆. There is an extreme need for being surrounded by help, support, and especially other women who have been through it or are going through it alongside you, describing that kind of community as uniquely powerful during this intense life change. ⁣

𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 and is focusing this new season on a postpartum meal delivery service for local parents while she spends time with her new baby. So many great highlights in this show!⁣
