For the past 4 years, residents of Silvergate Rancho Bernardo have come together to shop for, assemble, and fill Christmas shoeboxes that bring joy to children around the world. This tradition began with Bill Graham's Samaritan's Purse ministry and continues to spread Christmas cheer to children overseas. Next year, consider joining the effort by helping fill a shoebox for a boy or girl in need. Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church sponsors this meaningful project through Samaritan's Purse, making it possible to share hope, smiles, and Christmas blessings with children around the globe.

Yesterday was the final day of Kay Pickett and JoAnn Hawkin's Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child fundraiser! They collected 25 shoeboxes full of toys and goodies for the RB Presbyterian Church to add to their collection and send to children in need around the world. A big thank you to these ladies and everyone else who submitted a Christmas shoebox for helping Kay and JoAnn with this project. The boxes pictured are only a portion of what they've collected!

Our Silvergate residents recently enjoyed an educational outing to the San Diego Food Bank, located on Distribution Avenue, where they gained a greater understanding of the incredible work being done to combat hunger in our community. Thank you to the wonderful individuals at the San Diego Food Bank, Michael Minjares, Director of Grants Management; Kayla Thomson, Community Engagement Manager; and Shannon Kammerer, Philanthropy Major Gifts Officer, for providing this wonderful tour for our residents.

During their visit, residents learned some surprising facts about food preservation and waste reduction. Did you know that many canned goods can remain safe to eat for a year or two beyond their printed dates, depending on the type of food and the condition of the container?

Residents also discovered how the Food Bank works to reduce food waste by composting spoiled produce and other compostable food items. Rather than letting these resources go to waste, the compost is shared with partnering organizations, helping support efforts to grow food and nourish those in need.

After the tour, residents headed to Studio Diner on Ruffin Road, where they enjoyed a delicious meal and shared their thoughts on everything they learned.

It was an informative and enjoyable day that gave our residents a deeper appreciation for the dedication, resourcefulness, and compassion behind the Food Bank's mission. Yesterday was a great reminder that fighting hunger is about more than providing food. It's also about reducing waste, making the most of our resources, and working together to care for our community.

This past Sunday, Silvergate residents enjoyed a spectacular afternoon of music as they attended Celtic Thunder's final performance of their North American tour at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.

The talented performers captivated the audience with their powerful vocals, beautiful harmonies, and memorable renditions of fan favorites, including Danny Boy, Heartland, and The Sound of Silence.

Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the performance and couldn't stop talking about the incredible music and talent they experienced!

We have some talented residents here at Silvergate Rancho Bernardo! In addition to their artistic abilities, many also share a love for music.

Recently, a group of residents came together to form their own vocal quartet, performing a selection of Broadway favorites with piano accompaniment by fellow resident Van. The performance drew a packed house of over 80 attendees!

Thank you, Al, Barbara, Lyn, Mary, and Van for your special performance! We look forward to seeing your group perform again in the future!

This past Wednesday, our Silvergate Rancho Bernardo residents enjoyed a special outing to Seabreeze Chocolate Factory in Carmel Valley.

During their visit, residents enjoyed an informative presentation by Jim Lantry, Owner of Seabreeze Chocolates, on the art of chocolate making, including how chocolate is produced and how the regions where cacao is grown influence its flavors.

They also discovered Seabreeze Chocolates' commitment to working directly with cacao farmers, ensuring fair compensation for their hard work while producing high-quality, delicious chocolates.

After the presentation, residents visited Seabreeze's gift shop to purchase their decadent chocolates to take home to friends, loved ones, or for themselves.

After a morning of learning about all things chocolate, our residents stopped in for a BBQ-style meal at Bushfire Kitchen in Del Mar.

Another fabulous afternoon with guest speaker Rob Crisell!

Rob returned to Silvergate Rancho Bernardo for another engaging and entertaining lecture, blending humor, history, and timeless works of William Shakespeare into an educational and interactive experience.

Our residents had the opportunity to step into the spotlight themselves, bringing scenes from some of Shakespeare's most famous plays to life! With plenty of laughter, creativity, and audience participation, Rob made the world of Shakespeare both approachable and fun.

It was an afternoon of learning, laughter, and a little theatrical magic! Thank you, Rob, for another memorable visit. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Today was an incredibly meaningful day as our three communities came together for the Alzheimer’s Walk in support of Alzheimer’s San Diego.

We were challenged to raise at least $10,000 toward this important cause, with our parent company, Americare Health & Retirement, generously committing an additional $10,000 matching contribution. Our communities rose to the challenge in an amazing way, and today we were honored to be recognized as the 2nd highest contributors to Alzheimer’s San Diego, with more than $30,000 raised!

This cause is especially close to our hearts. Alzheimer’s disease and dementia have touched so many lives, and in our communities, we see their impact up close every day as we care for and support those living with these diseases.

Alzheimer’s doesn’t affect only the person diagnosed. It affects spouses, children, grandchildren, friends, caregivers, and everyone who loves them. It changes families, creates challenges that can be difficult to put into words, and reminds us just how important compassion, support, research, and continued advocacy truly are.

We are incredibly grateful to every resident, family member, team member, friend, and supporter who donated, participated in our fundraisers, walked alongside us, and helped make this achievement possible.

Today, we walked for those living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, for the families who love them, for the caregivers who support them, and for the hope of a future where no family has to face this devastating disease alone.

Together, our three communities made an incredible difference and we couldn’t be prouder.

What a wonderful celebration for Ron Pickett’s 90th birthday! So many friends and family members came from near and far to share the day and wish Ron a very happy birthday.

Ron is a lovely person and a cherished part of our Silvergate community. Over the years, he has led so many classes; from Creative Writing and Memoir Writing to Skillful Aging and Anyone Can Paint, helping others discover and express their creativity in one way or another.

We’re grateful for all Ron has shared with our community. Happy 90th birthday, Ron! 🎉🎂

Our residents had a great time with this fall’s Arts & Crafts project: W**e Cork Pumpkins! They glued and painted w**e corks to create adorable pumpkins that are perfect for decorating their apartments. We loved seeing everyone’s creativity come to life!

Our residents enjoyed a wonderful outing to Lamb’s Players Theatre in Coronado to see 'American Rhythm'! Fifteen residents joined us, and they couldn’t stop talking about the incredible performers and music.

The songs touched them deeply and brought back some amazing memories. It was a special afternoon filled with music, nostalgia, and lots to talk about on the way home!
