When students rely on the teacher for every instruction, decision, and check-in, the classroom becomes a bottleneck.
Students wait. Teachers carry the full cognitive load. Everyone’s capacity shrinks.
But when students know how to begin, find resources, assess their progress, and ask purposeful questions, something changes.
Students build confidence and agency.
Teachers gain the space to observe, coach, and respond where they’re needed most.
Independence doesn’t mean leaving students to figure everything out alone. It means intentionally designing routines, tools, and expectations that make ownership possible.
Supporting students to rely less on us isn’t stepping back from teaching. It’s building a classroom where learning—and teaching—can remain sustainable.
