🔬 Myth or Fact | Potency Testing vs. Safety Testing

Can a product meet its potency specifications and still fail a separate safety screening?

✅ FACT.

Potency and safety testing serve different purposes, and understanding the distinction is an important part of evaluating product quality.

🧪 Potency Testing measures the concentration of specific active compounds within a product, helping verify whether the measured content aligns with its stated specifications.

🔬 Safety Testing evaluates potential contaminants that may affect product quality and compliance with applicable standards. Depending on the product and testing requirements, this may include:

• Heavy metals• Pesticide residues• Residual solvents• Microbial contaminants• Mycotoxins

A product can contain the expected concentration of its target compounds while also containing contaminants that exceed established limits.

Why does this distinction matter?

Meeting potency specifications does not automatically establish that a product meets all relevant safety requirements. Each analytical test provides a different set of data, and together, these results offer a more comprehensive understanding of product composition, consistency, and quality.

At PharmLabs, our analytical testing services include potency analysis and a range of contaminant screening panels designed to support informed quality assurance decisions.

Industry News | Federal Regulatory Update.

On October 9, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced updated emergency scheduling actions involving certain botanical alkaloids and related compounds, reflecting ongoing developments in federal regulatory oversight.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued two new Notices of Intent incorporating updated scientific recommendations from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

A key component of these recommendations is the introduction of concentration and ratio-based thresholds for 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGPI). These proposed thresholds are intended to distinguish products containing trace amounts of these compounds from formulations with elevated concentrations.

Why is this significant for the analytical testing industry?

As regulatory requirements become increasingly specific, accurate chemical characterization and quantitative analysis play an important role in evaluating product composition.
Reliable analytical methods can provide valuable data regarding compound identity, concentration, and relative alkaloid profiles, helping industry stakeholders better understand evolving regulatory requirements.

These developments underscore the relationship between scientific research, analytical testing, and regulatory decision-making.

At PharmLabs, we remain committed to staying informed on industry developments and sharing relevant scientific and regulatory updates with our community.

🔬 MYTH OR FACT? | Mycotoxin Testing

Does removing visible mold mean a product is free from mycotoxins?

Answer: MYTH!

The absence of visible mold does not guarantee the absence of mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by certain fungi. These compounds can persist even after visible fungal growth has been removed, making visual inspection alone insufficient for evaluating potential mycotoxin contamination.

🧪 Why does analytical testing matter?

Targeted mycotoxin testing allows laboratories to identify and quantify specific fungal toxins, providing manufacturers with valuable data to support product safety, quality control, and applicable regulatory requirements.

At PharmLabs, our mycotoxin analysis services help manufacturers and businesses make informed decisions through reliable, science-based testing.

💬 Did you know mycotoxins can remain even when mold is no longer visible? Share your thoughts in the comments.

🔬 QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What is the primary purpose of endotoxin testing, and why is it an important component of evaluating product safety and quality?

Endotoxin testing is used to detect and quantify bacterial endotoxins, primarily lipopolysaccharides (LPS) associated with the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria.

Why does this matter? Endotoxins can trigger significant biological responses if present at unacceptable levels. And unlike viable bacteria, endotoxins can remain in a product even after the bacteria that produced them have been destroyed or are no longer detectable.

This is why endotoxin testing serves a different purpose from routine microbial testing. Rather than determining whether viable microorganisms are present, it measures the level of bacterial endotoxins in a sample and helps determine whether the product meets applicable specifications or acceptance limits.

Together with other appropriate analytical and microbiological testing, endotoxin analysis can provide a more complete understanding of a product’s quality and safety profile.

🔬 Industry News: Oregon is proposing updates to cannabis testing requirements.

The proposed changes focus on improving the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of laboratory results including a new pathway for certain products to be retested when potency results fall outside an intended target.

The proposal also addresses laboratory procedures, data integrity, sample preparation, and reporting standards.

Why does this matter?

Reliable testing goes beyond a single result. Standardized methods, proper sample preparation, quality control, and strong laboratory practices all contribute to analytical data manufacturers and regulators can confidently use.

As testing requirements continue to evolve, so does the importance of consistent analytical testing.

🔬 MYTH OR FACT | If a peptide tests high in purity, it doesn’t need separate heavy metals testing?

❌ MYTH.

A high purity result can provide valuable information about a peptide but purity does not tell the entire analytical story.

Peptide purity evaluates the target peptide relative to peptide-related impurities. Heavy metals are elemental contaminants and require a separate analytical method designed specifically to detect and quantify them.

Trace metals may potentially be introduced through raw materials, reagents, manufacturing processes, equipment, water, packaging, or other points within the supply chain.

That’s why a broader peptide quality program may evaluate more than potency and purity alone.

At PharmLabs, our Complete Peptide Testing Full Panel includes:

🔹 Peptide Potency & Purity
🔹 Heavy Metals
🔹 Residual Solvents
🔹 Endotoxin Screening
🔹 Sterility & Microbial Screening (TAMC & TYMC)
