What is Photokeratitis? 👀

Photokeratitis - also known as untraviolet keratitis - is an inflammation of the cornea (the clear cover of the eye) caused by overexposure to UV rays. The condition is temporary, although UV damage accumulates over time. It’s similar to a sunburn of the eye, with symptoms usually appearing 6-12 hours after exposure, and typically resolves within 1-2 days.

Common causes of Photokeratitis are:
• Overexposure to the sun, especially at high altitudes
• Sun reflecting off of snow or ice (snow blindness), water, sand, or cement
• Tanning beds or booths
• Man-made UV light, such as halogen desk lamps
• Looking directly at the sun, such as during a solar eclipse

While this condition is painful, it is easily preventable! Make sure to choose sunglasses that are labeled “UV400” or “100% UV protection” to ensure your eyes are protected.
