What can schools do to turn things around for their students? During this past week, The New York Times chose to ask top academics and those who research education to rate a range of ideas that could help reverse the decline in reading scores we've been seeing post-pandemic. The ideas are quite interesting. If implemented effectively, topics such as the science of reading and discussions about proper funding could go a long way to help increase reading scores, among the other solutions mentioned. On Friday Feburary 27, 2026, the Ninth Circuit issued a decision on the case we had argued before them back in October. This decision was a major win for students with disabilities. The Court recognized the inherent disadvantage parents are in when working with school district's and advocating for the needs of their children.

As long as parents continue to come back to the table, districts are required to ensure that a Student's Individualized Education Plan provides them the ability to make progress in light of their unique circumstances.

We are immensely proud to have worked on this case. Our small but incredibly passionate team put up a long fight that is always worth it. Win or lose, we can always confidently say that we are pushing to make a difference in children with disabilities's lives and ensure them appropriate access to education. Today, we get to celebrate this win that will have a positive impact on thousands of students. Tomorrow, we continue that fight for thousands more.

Call on Congress to Reverse Harmful Layoffs at the U.S. Department of Education

Key offices at the Department of Education, including the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE), have been significantly impacted by recent layoffs of almost all of their staff.

These offices are essential for enforcing and supporting critical laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Title IV of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

Without adequate staffing, the Department cannot fulfill its legal obligations to provide oversight, guidance, and support to states and schools. These layoffs directly threaten the implementation and enforcement of laws that protect access to a free appropriate public education and vocational rehabilitation services for youth and adults with disabilities.
