We were thrilled to welcome Professor Akitatsu Hayashi, MD, as our visiting professor this month. Dr. Hayashi is Director of the Lymphedema Center at Kameda Medical Center in Japan, the first Asian designation for Surgical Center of Excellence by LE&RN. Internationally recognized for his clinical and research contributions to microsurgery, supermicrosurgery, and lymphedema surgery, he has been at the forefront of advancing techniques for lymphatic reconstruction and non-contrast lymphatic imaging.

Most recently, he was honored as the ASRM Godina fellow. We are incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from his expertise, innovation, and perspective on Shokunin (the soul of Craftsmanship).

New publication alert! 📝

When planning combined plastic surgery procedures, does operative time fully capture surgical burden?

Co-first authors Miracle Uzoekwe and Shaan Sekhon analyzed 286,295 national cases and found that procedure count adds risk information beyond operative time and procedural complexity. Three or more procedures were associated with higher odds of reoperation and readmission, particularly for cases >4 hours.

Importantly, this is not a rule for when to stage—rather, procedural breadth may be another useful factor for preoperative risk assessment, counseling, and surgical planning.
