UCSF scientists created a new shape-shifting gel that helps them 3D-print stem cells into exact shapes. The result is tiny lab-grown organs called organoids. As the cells grow, the gel softens and gives them space to form into more natural tissue structures.

Why is this such a big deal? Growing organoids has always been a challenge because they never develop the same way twice. The gel allows for consistency. This breakthrough helps researchers build more accurate models of human organs to study diseases. In the future, it might even help doctors replace damaged tissue after a heart attack.

Swipe to learn more about how this shape-shifting gel works!

Can a health coach help people with chronic lung disease stay out of the emergency room? A new UCSF School of Medicine study suggests the answer may be yes.

Researchers found that patients paired with a health coach received 60% more recommended care compared to regular. Coaches helped patients stay on track with treatment, use inhalers correctly, learn breathing techniques, and keep up with appointments and medications.

Patients in the program reported better breathing and milder symptoms.

Pairing vulnerable, low-income patients with asthma coaches can improve outcomes and may also reduce costs associated with avoidable health care use.

Many people with epilepsy experience “brain blips” that disrupt memory, attention, and language thousands of times a day. UCSF researchers used high-resolution brain probes to see how these blips, called interictal epileptiform discharges, or IEDs, occur. They found that IEDs unfold in a pattern that could potentially be used to predict and prevent them. Such a treatment would greatly improve quality of life for people who live with this lesser-known symptom of epilepsy.

Epilepsy physicians Jon Kleen and Eddie Chang used high-resolution technology to see how cognition is disrupted in people with epilepsy and predict when it will occur. The new view points the way to being able to fend of these disruptions.

GLP-1 medications are known for helping with weight loss, but new research suggests they may also impact brain health.

UCSF scientists are exploring the link between GLP-1s, dementia, and addiction. Some studies have found that GLP-1 users show a lower risk of developing dementia. Researchers are also studying whether GLP-1s may help reduce cravings by targeting the triggers that drive relapse.

These findings could help open the door to new approaches for treating neurodegenerative disease and addiction.
