When care is delayed, patients return sicker and with fewer options. The stakes are real.
California’s public hospitals urgently need $500 million to protect access to care for the 3.7 million patients across the state and the more than 100,000 patients we serve here in San Francisco. As the City’s safety net hospital, we cannot shoulder this alone.
Today, our Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gabriel Ortiz joined SF Public Health Director Dan Tsai, California Association of Public Health (CAPH), SEIU Local 1021, and regional public hospitals to push for this critical funding so we can continue to provide equitable and compassionate care to all – no matter their situation – especially as we operate the City’s only Level 1 Trauma Center.
“Public hospital systems are the backbone of health care in California and must be supported,” our CMO, Dr. Ortiz shares. “With more than two-thirds of patients on Medi-Cal, Zuckerberg San Francisco General anchors the health care safety net in our community. As the only Level 1 Trauma Center providing comprehensive, 24/7 emergency and psychiatric emergency care, we are also the foundation of care for all of San Francisco’s most critically ill and injured patients.”
ZSFG’s Level 1 Trauma designation means 24/7 readiness: surgeons, operating rooms, blood supply, and specialized teams available in minutes. This lifesaving capacity cannot be cut and rebuilt later.
Most people never expect to need trauma care – but we are here when the unthinkable happens.
We need support to ensure we’re here when you need us most.
