He is not stalling to annoy you. Saying yes means agreeing that something has changed, and saying he will think about it keeps the question open without anyone losing.
Stop asking whether he wants help. Ask whether he would mind someone doing the driving on Thursdays.
A smaller question gets a real answer.

The fridge is the most honest room in the house, and it is the first place to look on any visit — not to catch her out, but because it keeps a record nobody is managing.
Dates, duplicates, and whether anything has actually been eaten.
Three minutes of looking tells you more than an hour of asking.

And the anger goes to him rather than to the illness, because the illness cannot be argued with and he can.
This breaks more families than the diagnosis does.
Say it to him before you say it to everyone else. Most siblings genuinely do not know.

But six is not a preference, and the cupboard is a record of decisions nobody was watching.
Check dates while you are in there. Duplicates and out-of-date food together tell you more than either on its own.

Which means nobody adjusted anything. The shopping, the appointments, the friend across town, the hairdresser — all of it silently became impossible at the same moment.
Giving up driving is one of the largest losses in later life and the one families most often fail to notice.
Look at what she has stopped doing, not at whether she still has a licence.

Same question most times, or no question — she just wanted the phone answered.
It reads as demanding and it is almost never that. Your voice settles something for about twenty minutes, and then it wears off.
Which is why a longer call does not help, and somebody actually in the room does.

Sometimes it is thrift that hardened into habit during a different decade.
Sometimes the ability to feel cold genuinely changes with age, so she is telling the truth as she experiences it.
Either way the house is cold, and cold does real harm to older bodies — blood pressure, chest infections, falls.
Check the thermostat rather than asking the question. The answer will be the same every time you ask.

If she pushes off the arms, rocks forward for momentum, or takes two attempts, it is too low or too soft for her now.
That chair may have been perfect for a decade. It is not a comment on the chair.
It matters more than it sounds, because a chair that is hard to leave gets left less often, and moving less is where a great deal of decline starts.
A firmer cushion fixes most of them in five minutes.
