Good morning Girl Moms - people who are around girls 13-18 and moms who might have friends with teenage girls in Marin. I have been asked to present at the Marin Teen Girls conference that will be taking place a week from tomorrow (Sunday March 3rd) from 9am - 3pm. It is open to all girls in 8th-12th grade in Marin County. I've attached the site to register as well as the roster for this years speakers. My specific panel will be on social media as it pertains to Fit Tok and diet culture with a goal of learning how to recognize and disseminate diet culture and how to be an ally for those who are feeling persecuted due to their weight or body shape and how to tune out media hype about how to "get fit." Being healthy, exercising and self care is not problematic, but going to the other side of that (constant body checking, food restriction, trying to change your genetics through diet and exercise and commenting on other peoples bodies) are harmful to those who do it and those who are affected by it. The goal is to help recognize when social media is having you doubt your own sense of your bodies needs, having you behave in ways that are not compatible with your body and how to head an eating disorder off at a pass. It's also to help those who might be flirting with Eating Disorders and what to do if you have a friend who might be developing one. It's also how to intervene when someone is speaking poorly about another persons body (ie: she shouldn't be wearing that, she's too fat...) etc. and how to neutralize the word fat. Being fat doesn't make someone bad, wrong or lazy and fat is not a mean word - it's an adjective the same as tall. And if we're being honest I'll probably find a way to blame the patriarchy for most of it. But subtly. I promise that your daughters won't leave my session with shaved heads and bras on fire (but if they decide to stop shaving their legs and armpits and start wearing cowrie shell necklaces -just blame the 90's.
