7 years and 1 day ago, i was sitting in labor & delivery triage at university of pennsylvania crying that i was headed to c-section on rishi’s birthday for a breech baby & oligohydramnios (not enough fluid). i was sad, mad, frustrated, and worried — none of it was part of my birth plan. i stayed pretty pi**ed off for days and then weeks and for some months too. but eventually, those feelings all disappeared. a breech baby, low amniotic fluid and a c-section weren’t in my plans but what i got from a most calamitous day, 1.5 hours after rishi’s birthday had passed, was my juhi. she is so much more amazing than anything i could hope for. juhi was and is my most perfect baby. she’s my mini me except nothing like me. i’ll be the first to admit she’s so much better than me! happy 7th birthday dear juhi. i love you.

i’m annoyed with myself.

annoyed that it’s taken me so long to take a stand.

i’ve been sitting on the sidelines allowing this anti-asian racism to proceed around me because that’s what I’ve done my whole life. allowed asians, and myself, to be bullied and turned the other cheek. it’s been going on my whole life. and the whole life my mother has been in america. and long before she even came.

we have been made to believe that it’s okay to pick on us. and for other kids to pull up the corners of their eyes to “look” like us. or to say i’d be the most popular girl in 2nd grade if i wasn’t, you know.... and for my 8th grade classmate to pick up a paper plate and say my face is flat like one. or to be passed over for countless positions for NO REASON whatsoever.

my father lived and died in america with the thickest korean accent yet never once spoke korean to me. he put me in “white” schools my whole life. all he wanted was a daughter who would speak english with no accent whatsoever. one who wouldn’t be bullied for her accent. like he was.

until the day he died, i was never bullied for my accent. instead, i was bullied for my eyes, nose, face, school lunch, smell of my house, mom who didn’t speak english, but i was not bullied for my accent, i guess.

i’m annoyed with myself for not having an answer to this problem because it felt beyond me. beyond 2021. beyond trump. beyond coronavirus. racism is so deep in the patchwork of america.

i once saw a therapist after a tragedy at work who told me that i’m a person who keeps a very clean house but that i have one messy closet. And that i constantly add more mess to the closet and then quickly close the door so no one notices. we, asians, we all live in this house.

i’m tired of this dirty closet. i’m ready to open the closet door. to my sisters and brothers: let’s open the door.

this ain’t going to be pretty.

we are ALSO having a BAD DAY.

i didn’t think it was possible to have a wonderful birthday in 2021, but it happened, and i am just so grateful.

i get pretty frustrated about how difficult it is to be a mom these days — distance learning and the chance we won’t even go back full-time next year... i need any sort of silver lining to make it. today’s silver lining: in a city normally jam-packed with tourists, we would never been able to do this with such ease.

we walked across the golden gate bridge and back. and my kids didn’t complain.

MY KIDS DID NOT COMPLAIN.

the person i have been most worried about since march 2020 has not been myself, on the frontlines of this pandemic, or my kids. it has been my 75-year old mother.

today is a hopeful day.

thank you, science. thank you, and thank you and the city of san francisco for bringing my family together again.

favor to ask — see below: it’s been almost a week since my 2nd dose of the pfizer-bioNtech vaccine & i feel great. my injection site was itchy and swollen for about 3 days and the first day i felt like i was going to have a migraine — a 15 minute nap made that all better. those are minor side effects for the greater opportunity to put this behind us.

now that the vaccine is becoming more widely available, can you all comment to this post or tag me in your own posts when you get YOUR SHOT? i’d love to see 5K+ folks out there filling my feed with hope.

for those who are still unsure because the vaccine is new, you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to get pregnant, only offered 1 shot and not 2, anything, please feel free to comment or DM me.

this is our shot.

ps: thank you to sal, my nurse extraordinaire, for my shot ❤️
