A follow up post from my last video to further explain the details and timeline surrounding the landmark special education case: Larry P. Vs. Riles 👩🏽⚖️
This case is so interesting to me because although it happened in the 1970s, it’s still widely discussed and impacting our work as school psychologists to this day.
Our state organization, the California Association of School Psychologists (CASP) has put out two main statements in the past decade strongly urging for the California Department of Education to (CDE) to make a statement to make clear that this ban on IQ tests for all Black students for any special education evaluation is too broad and outdated 👎🏼
I want to give the proper time and energy to explaining why CASP feels this way, so I’ll make a follow up video explaining the key arguments ❤️
We started a great discussion in the comments of the last video, so let’s continue it here ⬇️
✳️In CA, Is your district still giving you the guidance not to use IQ tests for any Black students, regardless of category?
✳️I’ve heard that in some districts they’re actually allowed to use the DAS or the CAS. If that’s you, can you explain why?
*️⃣And if you’re work outside of CA, what do you think hearing about all of this going on in our state?
