Public health care systems are essential to California’s health infrastructure – and our communities cannot afford to lose them.

California’s public hospitals are at a breaking point. As the City’s hospital and only Level 1 Trauma Center, Zuckerberg San Francisco General provides lifesaving care to more than 100,000 San Franciscans every year. When people delay care because of fear about coverage or cost, it often becomes crisis care – costlier, riskier, and preventable.

Today, Director Dan Tsai joined California Association of Public Health, SEIU Local 21, and regional public hospitals to advocate for the resources needed to protect access to care for the 3.7 million people who rely on California’s public health care systems – including our San Francisco community.

“Public hospital systems can’t be left on their own to navigate a hostile federal government working to roll back the progress we’ve made towards a more affordable, equitable health care system,” shares our Director. “We know our state leaders care about protecting public health and we're calling on them to go further. By fully stepping up for public hospital systems, they can prevent the rise of more preventable illness and death, facility closures driving longer patient wait times and commutes for care, and higher costs we all pay."

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to an end, we want to remind you that caring for your mental health is something you deserve year‑round.

Supporting your well‑being can look like:
• Checking in with yourself regularly

• Asking for help when things feel too heavy to manage alone

You don’t have to go through difficult moments by yourself. Talking with your primary care provider or a trusted health professional is a great first step — and SFDPH offers accessible, low‑ or no‑cost mental health and substance use services whenever you need them.

This , SFDPH honors and remembers those who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice reminds us of the deep connection between service, community health, and the well‑being of all who call San Francisco home.

As we reflect today, we also acknowledge the families and loved ones who carry their memory, and we reaffirm our commitment to accessible, compassionate public health services for every community.

Wishing all San Franciscans a safe and reflective Memorial Day.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that everyone deserves support — especially during difficult times. Self‑care is important, but sometimes we need more than that. Reaching out for help is a strong and healthy choice.

You may benefit from extra support if you notice:
• Stress that doesn’t improve with rest or breaks
• Feeling overwhelmed most days
• Mood, sleep, or appetite changes lasting for weeks
• Trouble keeping up with school, work, or daily tasks
• Using substances to cope with emotions
• Thoughts of self‑harm (seek help immediately)

If you’re unsure where to start, talking with your primary care provider or a trusted healthcare professional can help you understand what kind of support is right for you.

SFDPH offers compassionate, low‑ or no‑cost mental health and substance use. You don’t have to navigate this alone.

💡 Have you worked in San Francisco?
You may have employer health funds waiting for you. After opting out of their new employer’s health plan to stay on their wife’s insurance, Trish enrolled in SF City Option and was reimbursed for chiropractic care, prescription glasses, and both over-the- counter and prescription medications.

If you’ve worked in San Francisco, you may also have funds available through a San Francisco Medical Reimbursement Account (SF MRA). Click on this link to learn more:https://ow.ly/r4nZ50YVbtt

Most strokes are preventable — especially the second one.

Ischemic strokes make up 85% of all strokes, and survivors face a higher risk of another stroke if the cause isn’t treated. This month, we’re raising awareness about the steps survivors can take to stay protected.

Protect your health by:
• Managing blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol
• Staying active and following heart‑healthy eating habits
• Taking medications as prescribed
• Working closely with your care team to understand your stroke risk

Every action taken today helps prevent a future stroke.

Hepatitis Testing Day raises awareness about viral hepatitis and the importance of screening for hepatitis B and C. Many people living with chronic hepatitis don’t experience symptoms for years. That’s why testing is essential for early detection, treatment, and preventing long‑term health problems.

All adults should be screened for hepatitis B and C at least once in their lifetimes.
Talk to your health care provider about getting tested for hepatitis B and C. It could save your life.

Every May, National EMS Week brings communities together to honor the lifesaving work of emergency medical professionals across the country. SFDPH is proud to join San Francisco Department of Emergency Management in recognizing this vital work through the 2026 EMS Awards Ceremony.

This year’s awards celebrate outstanding contributions across the full spectrum of our EMS system – including emergency communications, first response, field operations, hospital based emergency care, community partnership, EMS leadership, disaster preparedness, and the expanding field of community paramedicine.

These professionals and community partners work around the clock to protect and improve the lives of San Franciscans. We thank them for their dedication, compassion, and commitment to service.
