How do you help an ADHD or ADHD suspected child lose weight?

At Step Together, we do this through a process called Invisible Weight Loss. It’s weight loss that happens without you ever having to focus on it directly and it works extremely well with kids that have ADHD driven weight gain.

After helping 500+ families use Invisible Weight Loss to stop even the most stubborn cases of childhood weight gain, we’ve perfected the process and I wanna share with you why it works so well and also break down for you the 5 pillars of this method that specifically work with ADHD kids.

2 main reasons why Invisible WEight Loss works so well that are very unconventional:

1. We don’t work with the child directly.

Research shows that ADHD kids are up to 50% more emotionally sensitive than neurotypical children. What this means is that they feel things deeper, their emotions come in harder and faster and it takes them a longer time to settle down when they feel them. This means when you work with an ADHD child directly on their weight you’re always risking their defenses going up because they’re going to be triggered by the shame of their weight gain.

2. We work directly with the parents instead.

This parent first approach allows us to bypass any and all risks of shame for the child because they’re no longer a project or target of something that needs to be fixed. It also allows us to teach the parents the skills and habits needed to create the kind of environment that is structured specifically for ADHD brains to control for the impulses that triggers them to eat in the first place.

This explains the WHY behind the approach and if you want to know the how, the video goes into the 5 pillars we use inside our programs to reverse ADHD driven weight gain so watch the second half for a breakdown!

And btw, we host a weekly workshop called Why Can't My Kid Stop Eating?

It breaks down not just this Invisible Weight Loss approach in more detail but also gives a full breakdown of the ADHD and weight gain connection.

How have we helped 500+ families stop childhood ADHD driven weight gain by never working directly with their kids?

That’s because we’ve perfected the parent first approach to childhood weight loss.

A parent first approach simply means we focus entirely on helping the parents learn the skills and have the knowledge on what they need to change and how they need to make the changes specifically to target ADHD driven weight gain in kids.

For adhd kids in particular this works for 3 core reasons:

1. We eliminate the shame of scrutiny.

ADHD kids are up to 50% more sensitive than neurotypical kids which means they feel things deeper, their emotions come faster and they all hit them harder. By never working with the kid directly we never make them the target, we never make them a project that needs to be fixed, we simply help the family overall, led by the parents, make the changes around the house that supports an ADHD brain for healthy eating.

2. Environment

You see all kids regardless of ADHD have underdeveloped executive function..thats the thinking part of your brain responsible for impulse control. That doesn’t develop till your mid 20s which means kids lack the general hardware to say NO to impulses. For ADHD kids specifically this is 10x harder so if you want your kid to change, then you need to change the environment in a way that is mindful of their impulsivity.

3. Parents are the stewards and leaders of the environment

You as the parent have the final say in the food environment AND in the emotional environment. Since ADHD kids use the environment to regulate their impulses and stimulation seeking you as the parents hold the power to influence that for the better or for the worse. And if you don’t know how to create structure, boundaries and support for an ADHD brain to learn to regulate internally..meaning without needing screens or food, then you’re always going to be setting up the child for weight gain, not weight loss.

Invisible Weight Loss is when you help your kid lose weight without ever focusing on it directly.

It works extremely well for ADHD or ADHD suspected kids who are resistant to conventional weight loss approaches.

This is because Invisible Weight Loss doesn’t ignore the key fact that uncontrollable eating and weight gain are actually the 2nd problem.

They’re just symptoms of the 1st problem of an ADHD brain using food and eating as a way to feel better.

You see the ADHD brain and its high impulse drive hijacks eating as it’s one of the fastest and easiest ways to get the stimulation the ADHD brain needs.

This hijacking of eating happens because the ADHD brain is just trying to feel okay.

And that quality of the ADHD brain is the 1st problem that drives the majority of the stubborn weight gain cases we see in kids. Which means if you focus on the 2nd problems of weight and eating you’re never going to succeed because your energies are focused on the wrong problem.

That’s why when you find and solve the 1st problem…so finding which of the ADHD drivers are the biggest factors in your child’s weight gain…

ANd then solving them by applying the right tool for their unique driver…what ends up happening is that the weight comes off without you ever having to focus on it.

That’s invisible weight loss…Solving the right first problem of ADHD so you stop what’s driving the weight gain. And when the biggest factor is no longer driving the weight gain, the weight comes off without you ever focusing on it directly.

That’s why Invisible Weight Loss works so well for ADHD kids.

The whole time it’s happening they never once feel targeted. They never feel like they are this project that has to be fixed. It completely bypasses the risk of them feeling ashamed because no focus is on the thing that makes them feel like they’re broken, which is their weight.

Invisible weight loss is what’s allowed us to help over 500 families with stubborn childhood weight gain so if you want us to help you apply it to your child, then book a call with us below.

With ADHD driven weight gain in kids, what’s most overlooked is that weight is the 2nd problem.

Eating that can’t stop, weight that is uncontrollable…all of this is the 2nd problem.

The implications and consequences of that 2nd problem though…are real problems, so I don’t want to downplay that.

The health implications are real. The shame. The self esteem, the bullying, the sneaking of chips at 1am, the wrappers behind the bed. All of that is real.

And they are all real symptoms of a different 1st problem most people are overlooking.

The 1st problem is ADHD. And ADHD isn’t just one single thing.

ADHD is really a collection of many different behaviors and traits that manifest uniquely in each person. Basically, ADHD is like a fingerprint…it generally looks the same but when you get to the details for each person, ADHD manifests very distinctly for each individual.

This is why we say that ADHD wears a 1000 masks because it shows up uniquely for each person.

Which if we bring it back to the idea that weight is the 2nd problem, it’s most accurate to say that the 1st problem of uncontrollable childhood weight gain is the 1000 masks of ADHD.

And if generally each mask of ADHD shows up differently in each person, it also means that specifically around uncontrolled eating…how ADHD drives weight gain will also show up uniquely for each person.

So if ADHD can wear a 1000 masks in terms of how it drives overeating, that explains why your kid has such a hard time stopping eating.

The 1000 masks of ADHD also explains why your attempts at stopping that eating and reversing the weight gain are likely failing as well.

Ultimately, anything aimed at getting your kid to eat less is aimed at the 2nd problem of weight. Meal plans. Cutting out sugar. More exercise. All of these are interventions aimed at the 2nd problem not the 1st.

And if the 1st problem drives the weight GAIN it doesn’t matter how hard you work at the 2nd problem of weight LOSS. This is why so many conventional interventions fail to produce sustainable long term weight loss EVEN for ADHD kids even if they work in the short term.

If a child is ADHD or suspected ADHD and they’re gaining weight uncontrollably, then the weight gain is the 2nd problem.

Eating that can’t stop, weight that continues to grow are all part of the 2nd problem.

The 1st problem is ADHD but if you’re solely focused on trying to solve the problem of weight, you’re always going to be focusing on the wrong root issue.

Does that mean gaining weight doesn’t matter?

Not at all.

Weight and uncontrolled eating ARE real problems. The health implications your doctor warns you about are real. The shame is real. The self esteem, the bullying, the sneaking of chips at 1am, the wrappers behind the bed.

All of that is real.

And they are all real symptoms of a different 1st problem most people are overlooking.

As I said earlier, the real first problem is actually ADHD and how it drives uncontrollable eating and weight gain.

The reason for this is that kids with ADHD are 12x as more likely to experience loss of control eating syndrome which is basically the scientific way to say you’re 12x more likely to not be able to stop eating if you have a neurodivergent brain.

So just pause and think about that for a second.

If you’re focusing on getting your kid to lose weight..you’re trying to get them to eat healthy, giving them meal plans, get them to do more exercise…you’re doing all of that while their brain is working up to 12x harder to simply eat everything in sight.

This is why for ADHD driven weight gain behaviors like sneaking food, constantly snacking, eating random things is so common…because they’re not eating for hunger..they’re eating to try and make their ADHD brain feel okay!

That’s like saying your break is 12 more powerful than your gas…you’re trying so hard, putting so much energy into the gas to go in a positive direction with weight loss…but the whole time the break of ADHD keeps you stuck in one place because it’s so powerful.

That’s why all attempts at trying to solve the 2nd problem ultimately fail

So Im curious, what’s landing for you when you hear this?

10/08/2026

An ADHD or ADHD suspected kid is up to 12x more likely to have what is called Loss of Control Eating Sydrome…which in simpler terms means they’re 12x more likely to NOT be able to stop eating.

John Hopkins university did a study on this years ago so why isn’t this ADHD and stubborn childhood weight gain connection more broadly known?

Well for 2 simple reasons:

1. Most studies looking at ADHD and weight gain are focused on adult populations and much less on children.

2. ADHD studies that look at children often focus on kids with severe behavior or school problems.

In other words, most ADHD funding and attention goes to kids who disrupt the classroom. The quieter, impulsive eater, with good marks often flies under the radar.

This has a lot of implications for parents because when they go to ask experts for help, what happens?

Pediatricians and doctors are taught to spot the problem child with ADHD not the one quietly suffering...because they’re relying on the core research which is biased for problem children and adults.

And on the flip side, dietitians and nutritionists are never even formally taught to consider the connection between ADHD and weight gain because they’re not there to spot or fix behavioral or school issues.

And what about interventions like therapy or psychiatry?

Well again, these experts are looking at the core research to guide their approaches which again is based on problem childhood behaviors and adults.

Which means for parents that have well behaved, good at school kids that are struggling with weight, are oftentimes overlooked.

And yet as I said at the beginning , when it comes to uncontrollable eating they can be up to 12x more likely to not be able to stop eating.

And this leaves many parents and their kids looping in this cycle of failed attempts at weight loss mainly because no one is there to help to spot the ADHD connection and also to create an action plan that addresses it.

So if you want to know more about how we address these issues make sure to subscribe and follow because we’ve helped over 500 families stop ADHD driven weight gain in kids.
