As a Viniyoga teacher and yoga therapist, I work with the whole person rather than focusing on isolated symptoms. Viniyoga addresses three of the five dimensions of the human system—the body, the breath, and the mind. Because these dimensions are interconnected, a change in one affects them all.
Think about what happens when you're suddenly startled. Your body tenses, your breathing changes, and your mind may race or freeze. The opposite is also true: when you calm the breath, the body begins to relax and the mind becomes quieter. When you focus the mind, the breath naturally steadies and the entire system becomes more balanced.
The five dimensions shown below are arranged from the least influential on the overall system (the physical body) to the most influential (our deepest emotional and inner well-being).
One of the unique strengths of Viniyoga is that it intentionally combines three points of access—movement, breath, and focused awareness. This layered approach creates an experience that is difficult to fully explain until you've felt it yourself.
Come experience Viniyoga for yourself, including a guided meditation, every Tuesday at 12:30 PM at Rhythm and Grace Studio on Main Street in Quincy.

The Five Dimensions in Viniyoga (based on teachings of TKV Desikachar
Dimension (Maya) Focus Area Therapeutic Application
Annamaya Physical Structure Modified physical postures (Asanas) designed specifically for an individual’s anatomy, age, and health conditions.
Pranamaya Physiological Function Utilizing the breath (Pranayama) to regulate internal systems, such as digestion, sleep, cardiac rhythm, and metabolic stress.
Manomaya Intellectual & Cognitive Mind Focus, attention, and memory tools to stabilize a distracted mind.
Vijnanamaya Behavioral Patterns & Beliefs Personality – your nature
Anandamaya Deepest Connection, Feeling, & Emotional Health Core emotional connection, relational connections

Key Principles of Desikachar's Approach
• The Individual Comes First: You do not fit the person to the yoga; you fit the yoga to the person. A practice must be adjusted depending on which layer holds the root cause of an illness.

• The Interwoven Breath: Desikachar placed immense emphasis on breath as the primary bridge linking the physical body (Annamaya) directly to the mind (Manomaya).

• Actionable Assessment: Instead of diagnosing a medical disease, a practitioner trained in this lineage uses the Panchamaya model to map out where a client's energy is blocked or misaligned across the five levels.

Aging & Movement
Daily habits, prolonged sitting, aging, and reduced bone or disc health can decrease spinal flexibility and alter natural curves. When mobility is limited, movement is often concentrated at transition zones-especially between the neck, upper back, and lower back-making these areas more vulnerable to wear, pain, and injury.

Viniyoga & the Spine
In Viniyoga, spinal elongation, or axial extension, is considered the foundation of movement. By creating length through the spine, the body can decompress, restore neutral alignment, and establish an open energetic pathway for prana (life-force energy) to flow along the central axis.

Elongation also improves flexibility between each vertebra, allowing movement and force to be distributed evenly throughout the spine rather than concentrated in a single area. This balanced distribution helps reduce strain and prevent regions of excessive wear or dysfunction. When the spine lacks flexibility and length, movement tends to hinge at one segment, placing unnecessary stress on a single spot.

Through the coordination of breath and movement, Viniyoga encourages healthy, segmental spinal mobility and supports both stability and ease within the body.

Come to my Tuesday 12:30 PM class at Rhythm and Grace Studio on Main Street , Quincy to have a personalized Yoga experience.

Goals of the class:
Development of Spine Elongation
Development of Breath Capacity
Deep Meditative Experiences

New Testimonials from Quincy

“ I have suffered with back pain for the past 30 years. Deb’s guidance, expertise advise and knowledge brought me real answers that has given me results. She empowered me with tools to help myself. “
Wendy Y,

“I took Deb’s yoga for Chronic Back Issues recently and found the information she shared about the spine and movement very valuable.
She then explained and took us through some gentle yoga movements to help with issues (all were specific to our abilities and concerns). Near the end she guided us into a breath-oriented quiet meditation.

And to top it off, she developed and emailed us a movement practice tailored to our needs. Her class is something you’d pay $100.+ for in a city, and we are blessed to have her knowledge and care giving in Plumas County. “
Averil K,

"I just took a class with Deb. I really appreciated that she explained how the spine works, and she also gave me exercises that I can work on throughout my day to keep my spine healthy. Thanks, Deb!"
