If you are struggling to find ways to relax without having a drink, consider these tips and tricks:

- Go for a walk. Get outdoors and consider a walk or light jog. Fresh air can do a lot to calm your senses and your mood. If you are a single parent with young kids, get the whole crew out and about with a quick walk around the neighborhood. Children often feed off of a parent’s stress, so they may need coping mechanisms as much as you do.

- Create your own spa. Both men and women can use a good spa day but maybe a luxurious massage and facial is out of your price range. Create your own spa at home with a bath bomb and sugar scrub. A warm bath can calm you down and help you transition from work to home or just give you the 30 minutes you need to unwind.

- Consider meditation. Breathing exercises can help relieve stress and anxiety in a matter of minutes. There are free or very affordable apps that can teach you calming breathing techniques.

- Lean on your support system. Your friends and family are there to support you when you need it most. Call or zoom with those you trust can put you in a better mentality if you are struggling.

Finally, if you are having a hard time relaxing without alcohol, consider getting treatment. Millions of adults suffer from substance use disorder but never receive the treatment they need.

Professional help can assist you in understanding why you use alcohol or drugs to cope and give you techniques for overcoming those triggers.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), many people experience short-term mental health problems during the holiday season.

NAMI holiday mental health data:
68% of people felt financially strained;
66% of respondents reported experiencing loneliness;
63% of people felt too much pressure;
57% of respondents felt they had unrealistic expectations;
55% of people “found themselves remembering happier times in the past contrasting with the present;” and
50% were unable to be with loved ones.

While the holidays can cause short-term depression and mental health disorders that may be alleviated as the stress and strain of the season ends, it can also lead to long-term disorders.

-

While people can experience any number of mental health disorders throughout the year, there are some that are more common during the holidays.

Common mental health problems experienced during the holidays:
Depression
Generalized anxiety disorder
Substance use disorder
Obsessive compulsive disorder
Social anxiety disorder

Holidays can increase feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety. Additional stresses such as financial strain, alcohol or drug use, and family requirements can all exacerbate these feelings.

-

It is important to seek treatment as early as possible if you begin to experience symptoms of mental health disorders. Going into the holiday season it is also important to set reasonable expectations and know your limits. Focusing on your mental and physical wellbeing during the winter months can make for a healthy, happy holiday season.

If you are experiencing feelings of anxiety or depression during the holidays, you have options for treatment. It is not uncommon for mental health disorders and substance use disorders to coexist. You should always seek professional help if you cannot control your alcohol or drug use, have tried to stop but cannot, or are using drugs or alcohol to escape.

You have likely heard it on the news – America is in the midst of a mental health crisis. But what does that really mean? If you do not personally know someone who struggles with mental health concerns, it can seem like a distant problem, but for millions of Americans, it is a constant, ever-present struggle.

Consider these 4 facts about mental health that you may or may not have known:

1. Millions of People Struggle with Mental Health Concerns

According to DoSomething.org, over 43 million people in the United States struggle with mental health concerns. Over half of these people will not receive adequate treatment for their disorder.

The stigma around mental health issues has yet to be lifted, although there has been progress made. It becomes more and more normalized as celebrities and other highly-visible people come forward with their own mental health struggles.

2. Mental Health Is a Problem Affecting All Ages

Mental health does not just affect the young or old. It affects people of all ages. Mental health struggles are something common to people regardless of how old they are, where they come from, or how much money they have in the bank. It affects people of every race and every religion.

3. Mental Health Disorders Are on the Rise

According to DoSomething.org, youth depression rates increased from 5.9% in 2012 to 8.2%. The rise in mental health disorders is not unique to a particular age group. More people than ever have acknowledged struggling with some aspect of their mental well-being.

4. Co-Occurring Disorders Are Common

It is not unusual for a person to suffer from more than one mental health disorder at the same time. It is also not unusual for a person to struggle with mental health and substance use disorders at the same time. DoSomething.org notes that over 1 in 4 adults with serious mental illness also struggles with substance abuse.
