When your adult child pulls away, it can feel like they don't love you anymore. But that's usually a sign of their emotional health, not rejection.

The problem is when we've put all of our emotional eggs in their basket. Any distance feels devastating.

The first thought we have is usually pretty random but your second thought is up to you. This video I shared my one experience of almost having a panic attack in Tahoe - the link is in the comments.

When your adult child pulls away, it can feel like rejection. But here's what I want you to hear. That's usually a sign of their emotional health, not a sign that something is wrong.

The problem is when we've put all of our emotional eggs in their basket. Because then any distance feels devastating.

Enmeshment is one of the patterns I see most often in codependency. When emotional starvation is part of your history, it's easy to look to your child to meet needs that were never meant to be theirs.

I say that with so much compassion. Because it makes complete sense given where it comes from. The goal is not to blame yourself. It's to see it clearly so you can start to change it.

And I don't want that weight on you or them anymore.

This one is hard to hear. A lot of moms in recovery think they know best for their adult kids. The advice comes from a good place. But when it's constant and unsolicited, it can feel like control to them.

And the adult child starts to pull away. Not because they don't love you. But because they need room to think for themselves and make their own mistakes.

In codependency, we often believe we're the authority on what other people need. That belief, even when it comes from love, can push the people we love most further away. And I don't want that for you.

When codependency is part of the picture, a child naturally pulling away can feel like abandonment. Not because anything is wrong. Because that's exactly what's supposed to happen.

But if you've been leaning on your child for emotional support more than you realized, that shift can be devastating.

Recognizing it is the first step toward changing it.
