For the last two years, since my daughter was born, I’ve been known to be a workhorse.
Almost overnight, I entered motherhood and a completely new career. I learned how to be a mom while learning how to build a book of business, and I got very good at the latter. I rose quickly, became successful by almost every definition, and spent a lot of that time disconnected from motherhood because, honestly, I think I had to be.
Then, a month ago, I was laid off. I found another opportunity, and three weeks later, that company paused its operations.
But as I do, in the midst of all this, I started dreaming.
I built the business out of what I love to do, and within a month I had my first two clients.
I thought I’d feel relieved. Instead, I felt scared.
Because somewhere in all of the working, providing, achieving and surviving, I forgot how to simply live.
How to be present. How to enjoy an ordinary day. How to be a mom and a wife without my mind always being somewhere else. Looking at these pictures, really, at my camera roll, I realized suddenly there weren’t a bunch of images from work, there were tons of moments I’ve been wishing I could have with the family I created. The thing I’ve been feeling disconnected from since the moment it came into existence.
I don’t know if this next chapter is about becoming less ambitious. But maybe it’s about learning to build a life where ambition has a place, without taking up the hopes I have for my home life.
My new prayer is to create something meaningful, so I can be present for the family I’m building it for. My desire is to remember that my worth was never dependent on what I accomplish in a replaceable role.
Before I am a business owner, a professional, a mother, I am also a human. I pray to remember that part the most. I am learning and socially flopping while doing it. I fall short as a mother, but the call from my higher power was never to be perfect.
It was simply to show up and have faith that god’s plans are greater than my own.
I’m scared. I’m hopeful. I’m figuring it out.
And for today, I hope this is enough.
