When should your child get their flu vaccine?

Flu season starts in the fall, just as kids return to school, where they share crayons, snacks — and yes, germs — with a lot of other kids. Make sure your back-to-school to-do list includes a trip to your pediatrician to bring your child up to date on immunizations, including for influenza. Getting a flu shot before the end of October means your child’s immune system can learn to resist the virus before it hits your community. On-time immunization keeps our kids, their classmates, and our communities healthier. CCP has Saturday flu vaccine clinics set up in both sites for the months of September, October and November. Central Coast Pediatrics is in alignment with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations to continue following the previous immunization schedule that is backed by scientific based evidence. We are very pleased to learn that the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is also in agreement with this and is not recommending the new schedule put out by the CDC. As always, please defer to your pediatrician and the American Academy of Pediatrics for evidence based information regarding vaccines and your child's health. We are here for you.

CCP Families, We're sharing this message from our beloved Dr. Macias that he has asked to share with you all. We are filled with gratitude and love for our wonderful friend and we wish him so much happiness and much deserved rest in his retirement:

A Message of Gratitude and Farewell

Dear Families and Friends,

It is with a mix of deep gratitude and bittersweet emotion that I announce my retirement from Central Coast Pediatrics, effective January 1, 2026. After 38 wonderful years of practice here in San Luis Obispo, it is time for me to begin this next chapter of my life.
Over the years, it has been my distinct privilege to care for the children of our community. Watching your children grow from newborns into young adults has been the greatest reward of my career. It has been a special honor when those same young adults returned to my practice as young parents with their own new babies.
To the parents who brought their children to me: thank you for your trust and confidence. You made me feel like a trusted member of your family, a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.
I also want to extend a special thanks to my partners, associates, and the entire team at Central Coast Pediatrics. Their excellent care, expertise, and shared love for our community have been the backbone of this practice. Our common goal of providing exceptional medical care will ensure the continued stability and success of the practice long into the future. I know your families remain in the best possible hands.
On a personal note, I want to thank my own family—my wife, Yvonne, and our sons, Matthew and Sean. I am forever grateful for their unwavering support and sacrifice. Without their love and understanding, I could not have been the pediatrician I am today.
As I move onto this new chapter, I feel forever blessed by the many memories I have shared with all of you. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives for the past 38 years.

With warmth and gratitude,

Dr. Rich Macias

Many are hesitant to vaccinate their children because of the aluminum content in vaccines. Scientific research and safety data support that the amount of aluminum in vaccines is safe and that humans ingest multiple milligrams of aluminum per day by living on this earth alone.
The providers at Central Coast Pediatrics continue to recommend childhood vaccines. Our stance has not changed.

Central Coast Pediatrics supports and aligns with the recommendations and advisement of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics that Acetaminophen is a safe medication and has no link to autism when used in children nor mothers. Please turn to your pediatrician and health care provider if you have further concerns or questions. 🩺

The providers at Central Coast Pediatrics stand behind the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation on childhood immunizations and schedule. With the influx of information on vaccinations families are facing, we hope to provide evidence based guidance and support. Find more information and links on our website, or visit the Vaccine Education Center by The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. https://www.chop.edu/vaccine-education-center

The AAP believes every family should have access to immunizations to keep their community healthy. Schools are an important part of that community, but close contact with other kids makes it easy for contagious diseases to spread quickly. That’s why most schools require routine childhood immunizations. When everyone in a school is vaccinated, it’s harder for diseases to spread.

Today, Governor DeSantis shared his plans to end vaccine requirements in the state of Florida. We are concerned that today's announcement will put children in Florida public schools at higher risk for getting sick, and have ripple effects across their community.

After an incredible 38 years of unwavering dedication and tireless hard work, Dr. Macias is finally embarking on a well-deserved retirement! His last day in the clinics will be December 19th, 2025.

Dr. Macias was a visionary co-founder of Central Coast Pediatrics, establishing the practice alongside his esteemed partners, Dr. Rowland and Dr. Long. From humble beginnings, their shared commitment to pediatric care has blossomed into a true pillar of the community. Today, Central Coast Pediatrics proudly boasts a team of over 10 dedicated providers, serving generations of families on the Central Coast.

Central Coast Pediatrics will undoubtedly feel the absence of Dr. Macias's warm presence and extensive expertise in the office, but his legacy of quality, compassionate patient care lives on with our dedicated team of providers and staff. He will leave the practice in the very capable hands of his partners, Dr.’s Anselmo, Battle and Bryden. The entire CCP family extends its deepest gratitude for his profound impact on countless lives and wishes him a retirement filled with joy, peace, and excitement.
