In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Teresa de Jesus de Los Andes.

Born Juana Enriqueta Josefina Fernández Solar in Santiago, Chile, in 1900, Teresa is remembered as a joyful and devoted witness to Christ. Known by many as Juanita, she grew up in a faithful family and felt drawn to God from a young age.

At fourteen, she sensed a call to religious life, and in 1919 she entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery in Los Andes, receiving the name Teresa of Jesus. Though her time in Carmel was brief, her life was marked by prayer and generosity.

Teresa died in 1920 at age 19 after an intense illness. Canonized in 1993, she became the first Chilean saint and remains a powerful reminder that holiness is possible through faith, love and everyday devotion to God.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Rose of Lima.

Born Isabel Flores de Oliva in Lima, Peru, in 1586, Rose became the first canonized saint of the Western Hemisphere. From childhood, she was known for her deep love of God, devotion to prayer and commitment to a life centered on Christ.

Inspired by Saint Catherine of Siena, Rose chose a life of sacrifice, humility and service. Though her family hoped she would marry, she remained devoted to her vow of virginity and later received the habit of Saint Dominic.

Rose’s life of prayer never closed her heart to others. She helped support her family through embroidery and lacework, and her days were marked by charity work and devotion. Canonized in 1671, Saint Rose of Lima remains a beloved witness of faith and love for God.

After learning the initial test hadn’t been completed, the family was connected with CHRISTUS in San Marcos, just four miles from their home.

From the moment they arrived, the team knew why they were there. A nurse cared for Pierce, reassured his first-time parents and recommended they stay while they waited for his results. When his bilirubin level came back high, the team moved quickly. Within minutes, Pierce was receiving the care he needed under the lights in the NICU.

For Lauren and Brian, having access to specialized newborn care so close to home made all the difference. Instead of another long drive with their newborn, they had a team ready to care for Pierce — and a place where they could stay by his side.

Today, Pierce is doing great, and his parents are grateful that when their family needed care, it was right in their own community. 💜

Today, we recognize LeAnne Slaughter for the compassion and dedication she brings to our tiniest patients and their families. After 37 years in nursing, LeAnne recently marked one year in the NICU, a chapter she describes as one of the most meaningful of her career. The NICU has challenged her to keep learning, remain curious and practice at her highest level, while also reminding her every day to lead with compassion and a gentle touch.

Her work reflects the heart of NICU care: celebrating tiny milestones, supporting worried parents and walking with families during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

As we wrap up NICU Awareness Month, we want to say thank you, LeAnne, for putting our values into action and for helping families feel supported and cared for throughout their NICU journey.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Óscar Romero.

Born in El Salvador in 1917, Romero became one of Latin America’s most courageous voices for justice, peace and human dignity. Though he was once viewed as cautious, his leadership changed after he became archbishop in 1977 and witnessed the violence and suffering inflicted on the poor.

Romero began preaching boldly against violence, corruption and the abuse of the powerless, knowing his words could cost him his life. His defense of the poor and vulnerable earned admiration around the world, including a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize.

On March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass, Romero was assassinated. Declared a martyr and canonized in 2018, Saint Óscar Romero remains a prophetic witness to justice, peace and the Gospel’s call to love and defend the vulnerable.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are celebrating saints like Saint Juan Diego.

Born Cuauhtlatoatzin, meaning “The Talking Eagle,” Juan Diego was an Indigenous Mexican man whose humility and faith became part of one of the most beloved miracles in the Americas. After being baptized with his wife, he embraced the Christian faith deeply and was known for walking miles to attend Mass.

On Dec. 9, 1531, as he traveled across Tepeyac Hill, the Virgin Mary appeared to him and spoke tenderly in his native language. She asked that a shrine be built, and when proof was requested, Mary provided a miraculous sign: Castilian roses blooming in winter. When Juan Diego opened his tilma before the bishop, the roses fell out and Mary's image appeared on the cloth.

Juan Diego spent the rest of his life serving pilgrims at the shrine. Canonized in 2002, he is remembered as the first Indigenous saint of the Americas and the beloved messenger of Our Lady of Guadalupe. His life remains a witness of humility, faith and trust in God's call.

Last week, Quincy and his brother Carter took the field as our first Kid Captains of the year. At two years old Quincy came to The Heart Center at CHRISTUS Children’s for an echocardiogram, doctors discovered that his heart had several different defects—some extra parts, some missing parts—and that he would need surgery.
Quincy faced a seven-hour heart surgery with incredible bravery. After a few days in the Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit, this little fighter was strong enough to head home and continue healing with his family and to champion health for all kids as a Children's Miracle Network champion!
