CPR can mean the difference between life and death in a cardiac emergency. Since cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time, knowing how to perform CPR is vital for the safety and well-being of others.

Step 1: Check for Safety
Step 2: Check for Responsiveness
Step 3: Begin Chest Compressions
Step 4: Rescue Breaths (If Trained)
Step 5: Continue Until Help Arrives

Student-athlete heart checks are essential for detecting underlying heart conditions that could put athletes at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. That's why physicians recommend that student-athletes receive a cardiac screening before participating in competitive sports to uncover any hidden issues or health concerns and reduce the chances of sudden death due to undetected heart complications. The more information you have, the more you can focus on your health moving forward and be proactive rather than reactive.

A calcium score test is a noninvasive 10-minute CAT scan that requires no needles or patient prep. This scan allows doctors to view the arteries of your heart from outside the body to measure the amount of calcium buildup in the walls of the coronary arteries. Comparable to mammography, it is considered safe and involves very little radiation. Adults with intermediate risk for coronary artery disease should consider coronary calcium screening, as early detection may be able to reduce their risk of a heart attack.

Javier Pizana had just finished celebrating his mother’s 84th birthday when he awoke to sharp pain and pressure. Recognizing something was wrong, he arrived at our emergency room, where he learned he had eight major blockages in his heart and required a triple bypass. A vein was taken from another area of his body to create detours around his severely blocked coronary arteries. His recovery would continue through our cardiac rehab three times a week as he learned to rebuild his strength, improve his endurance, and regain confidence. He recently graduated and is back doing the things he loves. He’s grateful to the team that supported him at every step of his recovery.
