PRISM Lab

PRISM Lab Our research aims to understand processes that confer risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

The Prevention and Research in Suicide Mechanisms (PRISM) Lab is a research lab in the Department of Psychology at Texas State University led by Dr. Megan Rogers. Our program of research broadly aims to understand, improve the assessment of, and intervene upon (and mitigate suffering related to) processes that confer risk for suicidal ideation, intent, and behavior.

We’re excited to welcome two new students to the PRISM Lab this semester! Paige Shunn is a sophomore joining us through her affiliation with the Texas State University IDEA Center https://ideacenter.txst.edu/), and Whitley Keller is a first-year graduate student in the MA in Psychological Research program, with research interests in athlete mental health and su***de prevention. We’re happy to have them on the team!

Although we are very late posting about it here, it was an absolute delight to celebrate two of our lab's graduating students back in December:

Jordan Ross graduated with his MA in Psychological Research. He worked with us in the PRISM Lab for a year and a half (and will continue to do so part-time post-graduation!); he has been responsible, present, and thoughtful across the board - and our key go-to person for all sorts of research-related automation and tech-related troubleshooting.

Lauren Pischinger graduated with her BS in Psychology and spent a year in the PRISM Lab gaining research experience. She played an absolutely integral role in study coordination/data collection for THREE of our recently completed studies (including the Master's theses of both other students pictured) and brought such a positive attitude to the lab alongside her reliability and astute attention to detail.

We are excited to share one of our new publications, “Examination of the moderating role of internalizing symptoms in the direct and indirect relationships between alcohol use severity, rumination, and suicidal ideation,” led by current and former lab members: Olivia Teasdale, Dea Mitaj, Madison Risner, and Jordan Ross, and assisted by fellow Texas State faculty member Jessica Perrotte.

This study looks at complex direct and indirect relationships between alcohol use severity and suicidal ideation through rumination, as well as how internalizing symptoms (depression and anxiety) moderate these pathways in a sample of 278 community-based adults with current suicidal ideation and/or a lifetime su***de attempt. Although rumination did not significantly account for the relation between alcohol use severity and suicidal ideation, depression and anxiety symptoms moderated these associations in varying directions.
