Artificial intelligence is sold as clean, inevitable, and limitless. A frictionless leap into the future. This book tells the other half of the story: the concrete, steel, silicon, and fossil fuel that make that future possible, and the communities absorbing the cost.

The way I see it, there are two ways forward. One is we build and build, extracting everything we can to feed AI and its ever-growing need for electricity and computational power. The other is we find a way to use AI responsibly, balancing computational power and environmental concern.

AI needs power, and as it stands today, methane turbines are the answer. This pushes our climate ever faster towards the tipping points we have been warned about since the 80s. This reliance on fossil fuels should make us think twice before we do something that can't be undone.

This is not an anti-technology argument. It's a demand that a technology this consequential be built with the same rigor, foresight, and public accountability as any other piece of critical infrastructure — before, not after, the damage is done.

We have to advocate for responsible AI development.
