What seems like innocent small talk, can actually be a very loaded question for some people. Maybe their family is complete with one child. Maybe they are struggling with infertility or experienced a loss. Maybe they had a traumatic birth or had postpartum depression or anxiety.

The decision to expand a family is a deeply personal one. Ask about something else. 😉

A big day for our family last week! We dropped Audrey off at Columbia University for her junior year. It’s James’s alma mater, so it felt extra special. It had just rained on us, but it’s the only photo of all three of us on campus and I sort of love it.

It’s always bittersweet (I really thought the goodbyes would get easier by now!). But NYC is such an amazing place, and I’m so excited for all the new adventures and experiences ahead from her first apartment and exploring a new city to studying at an incredible university.

Now I’m just trying not to check her location every five minutes or wonder why I haven’t heard from her every day. The house feels so different without her and I may just be hugging the twins a little more. Transitions are hard, even when you know they’re exactly what you want for your kids.

I guess this is what raising kids is all about. Holding them tight, slowly letting them go, cheering them on, and learning to find our new normal along the way.

Parenting isn’t gendered. Community shouldn’t be either.
