In the US, to qualify for special education support as a student with a disability, IDEA states a child:
1. Has a disability (from a list of 13 categories) AND
2. Needs special education and related services as a result of that disability

This means that not all kids with a disability will qualify - which makes sense, we know many kids benefit from accommodations through 504!

BUT many states limit that second part to mean only an academic need, when there’s SO much more than should be considered. This leads kids who may benefit, a denial of support because “they’re doing fine academically,” “they have passing grades,” “they are gifted so don’t qualify,” etc.

I can’t think of a school that aligns more with the Learn With Less Framework than SMPNS:
simple objects with a big impact; authentic connections between caregiver & child; emphasis on the whole child’s development through play… this is a school that ticked every one of my SLP/Mom boxes. I’m so proud to be able to serve on its Board and share it with the San Mateo community!
