Beacon House The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a long-term substance abuse recovery center You can learn more at www.thebeaconhouse.org.

The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a state-certified, residential substance abuse recovery program for men with a sincere desire to achieve long-lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol. As residents of the Beacon House, the men are provided with food, shelter, counseling, peer group support, educational opportunities and career training through social enterprise programs, including a T

hrift Shop. This allows the men to develop the life, career and social skills they need to build a foundation in recovery, while preparing them for a strong reintegration into the job market and a bright future when they return to their family, home and community. Recently named one of the best addiction treatment centers in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, men from 39 states across the country have received treatment at Beacon House. The organization has grown over the past 50 years to encompass a full city block in San Pedro, California, adjacent to the Port of Los Angeles, including six residential facilities with the capacity to house 110 residents, as well as a kitchen/dining facility. With the support of our donors and the local community, we have helped thousands of men get a second chance at life and regain their place as responsible, productive members of society.

A group of Beacon House men recently joined San Pedro Historic Downtown Waterfront (PBID)'s Community Cleanup & Planting Day, spending the day sweeping streets, picking up trash, and helping beautify the community we proudly call home.

Recovery teaches us that growth comes through action, and this event was a great example of that principle in practice. By giving their time and energy to improve the public spaces we all share, our men felt a deeper connection to the community around them.

Our men recently had the privilege of assisting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor with their College Bound Celebration. The College Bound program is dedicated to increasing graduation rates and expanding opportunities for young people in our community.

Our men assisted with event setup and returned afterward to help with teardown.

Giving back to organizations that strengthen our community is something our men are always happy to do. Congratulations to all of the graduates! 🎓

The “rock bottom” myth suggests that people struggling with addiction can only benefit from treatment after reaching their lowest point. This belief can be harmful because it often delays intervention, allowing addiction to progress, and increasing the risk of serious consequences.

Research shows that recovery does not require someone to lose everything before treatment can be effective. Instead, the concept of “raising the bottom” encourages people to recognize the need for change before consequences become devastating. While a crisis may sometimes prompt immediate action, recovery can begin at any point. What really matters is the willingness to make a change.

At Beacon House, we work with men whose lives have been shaped by years of addiction, homelessness, incarceration, and repeated setbacks. While most treatment programs are measured in weeks, real change often takes years. That's why the average stay at Beacon House is about three and a half years.

During that time, men receive individual counseling, group therapy, workforce and community reentry support, and legal advocacy. Every service is designed to help them build the stability and skills needed for lasting recovery. They are never charged a dime.

Our monthly giving community, Lighthouse Keepers, helps us allow men to stay in treatment long enough for real change to take hold. Month after month, these supporters ensure that recovery remains within reach for the men who need it most.

Recovery is happening every day at Beacon House. Lighthouse Keepers make it possible.

Addiction often causes people to become consumed with their own pain, without realizing the harm being done to the people who love them most. Families are often left carrying fear, heartbreak, and uncertainty every single day. Recovery changes that. With time and continued growth, healing becomes possible, and relationships can be rebuilt.

Today, Griffin is grateful for that opportunity. Knowing the pain his addiction caused his family serves as a daily reminder of why recovery matters, reinforcing his commitment to growth and becoming a source of stability in their lives

For many people struggling with addiction, holidays don’t always feel like celebrations. For many of our men, they used to be tied to feelings of isolation, pain, and memories they’d rather forget.

But this year, they got to spend the day building some new memories together at the park. There was softball, volleyball, burgers on the grill, and plenty of fun throughout the day.

Being part of a recovery community changes everything. Instead of spending Memorial Day alone, our men spent it surrounded by friends.

Eddie spent most of his life trying to outrun his negative emotions. The thought of confronting his grief and anger was scary, so he numbed them with drugs and alcohol. At Beacon House, he learned that if he continued avoiding this work, he would not be able to stay sober. With the support of the men around him, he learned how to deal with those emotions in a healthy way.

Eddie’s life has changed significantly in the last couple of years. He’s been able to mend damaged relationships with his family, passed his high school equivalency test, and now has a long-term goal of becoming a juvenile probation officer. But more importantly, he has joy back in his life.

Our men recently took a camping trip to Silverwood Lake, stepping out of their normal routines for a few days of hiking, relaxing, and spending quality time together outdoors.

Some used the trip to slow down and recharge their batteries, while others stayed active and made the most of every adventure. Whether they were exploring the creek at night looking for frogs, climbing trees, or splashing in a lake for the first time, many of the men shared how meaningful it was to reconnect with their inner child.

They all came home with lots of stories and a deeper connection to our community.

Our men were happy to volunteer at this year’s Constitution Day celebration hosted by our neighbors at the Sjømannskirken i Los Angeles. This annual event celebrates Norway's independence and brings the community together through food, festivities, and a parade through the streets on San Pedro.

From directing traffic and serving food to bussing tables and washing dishes, our men were honored to lend a hand so church members could focus on welcoming the community and enjoying the celebration. It was a fun opportunity to serve alongside our neighbors and be part of a long-standing local tradition.

When he was younger, Tim began smoking w**d and drinking for fun. At the beginning, he had no idea that fentanyl would eventually bring him to his lowest point. It took losing nearly everything for him to find the willingness to ask for help.

When he arrived at Beacon House, he saw men living with real freedom. Over time, honesty and selflessness began to take root in his life and he started to feel some of that freedom himself.

Tim now works as an EMT and has plans to become a firefighter for the city of Los Angeles. He and his wife recently welcomed a beautiful daughter into the world, and he stays active in service because he knows that’s what keeps him grounded.
